Description

The studio is starting preproduction on a new game built on Unreal Engine.

The role is about understanding the engine well enough to find the real cause of a problem, and setting practices the whole team can build on.

You report to the Gameplay Director and work with the Gameplay Lead, the Studio Technical Director and the full GPP team.

Success means GPPs come to you readily and trust your input, your engine documentation becomes the team's reference, you own TRC and performance issues, and you can go deep into the engine whenever needed.

Building recognised Unreal expertise could lead to a lead or engine architect role and make you the studio's technical reference on the engine.

Responsibilities

  • Become the team's main Unreal Engine expert and act as the technical partner of the GPP leads in defining coding standards.
  • Build the engine systems the game needs in C++, working directly with the GPP team.
  • Diagnose and resolve current technical issues, and anticipate future ones.
  • Own console TRC compliance on every platform.
  • Set up a system to track performance, using Unreal's testing APIs or Gauntlet.
  • Monitor performance with Unreal Insights and pass your recommendations on to the GPPs.
  • Document engine processes and best practices so the team has a reliable reference.

Requirements

  • Strong C++ and Unreal Engine experience, with real hands-on time inside the engine itself.
  • Comfortable working out answers when the documentation does not cover the problem.
  • Knowledge of console TRC and their technical requirements.
  • Hands-on experience using Unreal Insights for performance diagnosis.
  • Professional level French and English, as English is increasingly used day to day.
  • A plus: familiarity with Unreal's rendering stack and rendering-related performance work.
  • Teammates come to you when they are stuck, and you leave them better equipped than before.
  • You enjoy teaching as much as solving problems and you champion best practices.
  • You stay calm under pressure and want to understand why something works before working around it.
  • You are curious, rigorous and open to feedback, and you never assume you are right.

Conditions

The hiring process starts with a first interview with the HR Manager, followed by a CodinGames test.

The second interview is with the Technical Director and the Lead Gameplay.

The third interview is with the Game Manager and Studio Manager.
