Description

The role is a senior data scientist position based in the Dowty office in the UK, reporting to the UK Senior Director of Data Science. Dowty is part of the company, and the work is to build AI, ML and advanced analytics solutions that deliver clear value to Dowty's internal customers.

You will work on your own and also lead cross-functional teams. You will turn customer needs into working solutions quickly, understand how analytics will be used in day-to-day operations, and keep looking for new technologies to apply. You will also lead and support junior team members.

You will work with Dowty functional leaders to pick high-impact AI and ML projects and support Lean initiatives such as Kaizens, VSMs and gembas. You will stay in regular contact with customers to keep projects focused and relevant, and work with local DT staff so solutions fit existing business IT and data systems.

Key traits for the role: you lead change where it is needed, you make clear who on the data science team does what, you act sensibly when information is incomplete and help the team push through uncertainty, you bring ideas from many fields and test new approaches, you influence colleagues and stakeholders constructively, and you advocate strongly for the customer while communicating well with a wide range of people.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Dowty functional leaders to choose and rank suitable AI and ML projects.
  • Support Lean activities including Kaizens, VSMs and gembas.
  • Keep close contact with the customer to maintain project focus and relevance.
  • Make sure solutions work with existing business IT and data systems, in partnership with local DT staff.
  • Lead and support junior team members, including guiding them on AI, ML and programming work.
  • Champion Lean processes and values.
  • Work with domain experts to draw insight from large, fast-changing, unclear and sometimes conflicting data.
  • Build and test advanced models, including combining pre-trained models with simulations or other advanced modelling.
  • Develop, test and release maintainable code that follows coding standards and the analytic development process.
  • Set and carry out validation, reproducibility and deployment criteria for models.

Requirements

  • Strong Python scripting skills. Show this clearly in your CV.
  • Confident use of version control, ideally GitHub. Show this clearly in your CV.
  • Experience with analytics development platforms and deployed analytics architectures.
  • Advanced modelling experience, including integrating pre-trained models with simulations.
  • Awareness of model management options covering model building and deployment.
  • Ability to deliver results quickly by reusing existing scripts, knowing when a solution or set of options is good enough, and relating outputs to real-world outcomes.
  • Proven ability to define and deliver customer value.

Conditions

Hybrid is not stated; this role is based in the Dowty office in the UK.

UK Security Clearance (SC) is required and must be kept for this role. Candidates who do not meet the minimum requirements are not eligible on national security grounds. If clearance is not obtained, an offer may be withdrawn on national security grounds.

Applications from people who need sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all others. Under UK immigration rules, which may change from time to time, a candidate without the right to work in the UK may not be appointed if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled candidate who does not need sponsorship is available.

GE supports flexible working arrangements where possible and recognises the value of a healthy work-life balance.

  • Holiday allowance equivalent to 26 days, with the option to buy or sell days.
