Senior C++ Developer

Description

The company is hiring an R&D software developer to build C++ applications for performance-critical systems.

You will build secure, high-performance software in modern C++ (C++17/20) for real-time use, with long-term reliability and support across the product lifecycle.

The role sits in the Grid Automation domain, where the work covers power systems and real-time software used in critical infrastructure worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Design multithreaded, I/O-driven systems that meet strict latency targets for real-time operation.
• Build high-performance C++ core components that serve managed runtime services in.NET and RUST, with minimal added latency.
• Profile threading, reduce lock contention and cut memory allocations on critical paths to keep latency predictable as load grows.
• Apply current C++ standard practices in day-to-day development.
• Keep code quality high through peer reviews, unit tests and principles such as SOLID, KISS and DRY.
• Take part in architecture reviews, design documents and roadmaps covering new features, refactoring and modernising legacy code.
• Work with engineering, product and business stakeholders to turn requirements into clear architecture.
• Help decide on dependencies, build tooling, dependency management and secure software supply chain practices.
• Modernise build systems and keep software consistent across Linux and Windows deployments.
• Develop and deploy on Linux.
• Deliver reliable software that supports business goals, and extend existing systems with new features.
• Work in an agile team, deepening your technical skills and your understanding of the business domain.

Requirements

• A university degree in computer science, engineering or a related technical field.
• 5+ years in senior technical roles.
• Advanced command of modern C++ (C++17/20), including RAII, smart pointers, the STL, concurrency and memory management.
• Practical knowledge of C development (in plus).
• Strong hands-on work with multithreading, synchronization primitives, asynchronous I/O and real-time system design.
• Experience building cross-platform software for Windows and Linux with CMake and Visual Studio.
• Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and microservices patterns.
• Proven work on performance profiling, optimisation and low-latency systems.
• Understanding of software architecture and of secure, scalable system design.
• Strong problem-solving skills for complex technical challenges.
• Working knowledge of unit and integration testing and the frameworks used for them.
• Familiarity with non-functional requirements such as performance, scalability and security.
• Practical experience building power grid management and monitoring systems, with familiarity with WAMS/WAMPAC, PMU data, and protection and control applications (in plus).
• Understanding of power grid operations and the standards that apply to them.
• Experience with industrial automation systems such as SCADA, IED and RTU (in plus).
• Experience with industrial protocols and standards including IEC 61850, IEC-60870-5-104, DNP3, OPC UA and IEEE C37.118 (in plus).
• Direct work with power grid industry clients, and exposure to system integration, simulators or lab environments (in plus).
• A proven record of turning customer requirements into clear technical designs.
• Solid grounding in numerical methods, signal processing and control fundamentals, and the ability to handle high-frequency, time-aligned time-series data.
• Good understanding of power system dynamics and the stability problems caused by high renewable penetration.
• Good teamwork, clear communication and a willingness to learn.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
