Senior AI Engineer

Description

The company is building a modern accounting platform for small and medium-sized businesses, aimed at cutting the time they spend on finances.

Much of accounting is repetitive manual work that is hard to automate reliably. The team combines AI with sound software engineering to handle financial workflows from start to finish.

The work includes processing financial documents and managing workflows that run for weeks. Businesses need to trust these systems, so accuracy, reliability and traceability carry as much weight as speed.

The role sits within the backend and applied AI work behind the platform. You take solutions from early experiments through to production.

Responsibilities

• Design systems that pair LLMs, tools and structured data to automate complex accounting tasks.
• Make AI dependable in production by combining LLMs with deterministic logic, validation and human review, so results stay accurate, traceable and resilient.
• Build and run evaluation and testing practices, find failure modes, and improve accuracy, latency and cost.
• Build APIs, integrations and long-running workflows that connect AI capabilities to real financial processes.
• Help define how AI-powered systems are designed, monitored, tested and changed as the product grows.

Requirements

• Solid software engineering background, ideally with production systems involving APIs, databases and distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience building applications with LLMs, tool calling or agentic workflows, and an understanding of what it takes to run them in production.
• Ability to test nondeterministic systems, measure their quality and investigate failures.
• Judgement about when AI is the right tool and when conventional software fits better, and how to balance experimentation with maintainability.
• Ability to take a problem from idea to production, make technical decisions and work closely with engineers and domain experts.
• No machine learning research background is needed, and no prior experience in accounting or fintech. What matters is turning AI capabilities into reliable software that solves real problems.
• Stack: Python, Django, PostgreSQL on Google Cloud (GCP). The stack is still changing, especially around AI, and you can help shape the tools, architecture and practices.

Conditions

In-office role, 5 days a week, based in Lisbon.

The product is early, so parts of it are rough and there is a lot to work out.

Expect to wear several hats and take on work beyond your usual remit, wherever help is needed, for the foreseeable future.

You are expected to use AI tools to move faster and experiment. Quality of what you build is what counts, not lines of code written.
