Senior Research Engineer

Description

The company is a travel technology firm that is building out computer vision and digital identity work, and this role sits at the center of that effort.

The role brings computer vision, machine learning and biometric methods from research into production, supporting products such as Seamless Travel that travelers use around the world.

You will set the scientific direction for the applied-research roadmap and lead a largely remote team based in Lisbon and Porto/Gaia.

Responsibilities

• Shape the applied-research strategy for face recognition, image quality, anti-spoofing and new biometric capture pipelines.
• Define good practice across the whole lifecycle, from data collection, labeling and dataset governance to training, deployment, monitoring and retirement of models.
• Check accuracy, robustness, bias, security and privacy continuously, and make sure work meets the EU AI Act, GDPR, ICAO, ISO and NIST standards.
• Guide the product and technology roadmaps and work with teams such as Device Management and Services.
• Solve hard technical problems, handle escalated SDK support requests, and contribute to European projects.
• Make sure code and algorithms meet security, governance and software lifecycle standards.
• Produce patents, publications and trade secrets, and mentor other researchers.

Requirements

• You have 5+ years of experience in computer vision, machine learning or a related field, in industry or at public research institutions.
• You have a record of turning research into production-ready solutions.
• You have deep experience with deep learning for image tasks, strong Python skills and hands-on model training experience.
• You are comfortable working across different tools, machines and technologies, and you are happy with ambiguity.
• You communicate well and enjoy mentoring.
• A PhD in computer vision or a related field is preferred, and publications or academic research experience are valued.
• Nice to have: biometrics experience (internal training is provided), plus software engineering and C skills.
