Senior Backend Engineer

Description

The company builds an accounting platform for small and medium-sized businesses, aimed at cutting the time they spend on bookkeeping so they can focus on running the business.

Much of accounting is repetitive, manual, and hard to automate dependably. The company pairs AI with disciplined software engineering to run financial workflows from start to finish.

The work includes processing financial documents and managing workflows that can run for weeks. The systems must be trustworthy with money, so accuracy, reliability, and traceability count as much as speed.

The product is still early, and parts of it are rough. The current stack is Python, Django, and PostgreSQL on the backend, Google Cloud for infrastructure, and React on the frontend, and it is still changing.

Responsibilities

• Build features across the whole stack, from backend services and APIs to the user-facing side.
• Own what you build, from technical decisions through to production.
• Create AI-driven workflows for real accounting tasks, combining LLMs with deterministic logic, validation, and human review where needed.
• Design long-running processes that handle failures well and recover without losing track of what has happened.
• Extract, process, and reconcile data from invoices, receipts, bank transactions, and other financial documents.
• Help set the architecture, development practices, and technical direction as the product and team grow.

Requirements

• Solid engineering fundamentals, with experience designing, building, and maintaining production systems and a good grasp of architecture, databases, APIs, and distributed systems.
• Comfortable building backend applications in Python.
• Experience with Django and PostgreSQL is a plus.
• Practical judgement: you know when to keep things simple, when a sturdier solution is worth the investment, and how to balance speed with maintainability.
• Able to take a problem from idea to production, make independent decisions, and work closely with technical and non-technical colleagues.
• Curious about building software with LLMs and agentic workflows. Hands-on experience is a strong plus but not required.
• No machine learning research background or accounting or fintech experience is needed. What matters is turning AI capabilities into reliable software that solves real problems.
• Experience with the current stack is a plus, but strong engineering fundamentals matter more.

Conditions

In-office role, 5 days a week, based in Lisbon.

The company believes strong early-stage teams are built by working in the same room.

You will wear several hats and take on work beyond your usual responsibilities wherever you are needed, and that will continue for some time.
