Description

The company is looking for a hands-on Principal Engineer to design, build and evolve software products that tackle real business problems at global scale.

As a principal Java engineer, you will apply deep technical knowledge to lead the building of high-quality products, mentor other engineers, share your expertise and raise the technical standard across the team.

You report to an Engineering Manager and float across several engineering teams.

You will write code in the codebase and help deliver sprint commitments, following modern cloud-based development, agile and Scrum, code quality and sound tooling.

You will help shape software architecture and serve the technical user base of the company and GFT.

Responsibilities

  • Build critical features and complex full-stack solutions in Java that are clean, efficient, maintainable and meet high quality standards across several agile teams.
  • Work with other principal engineers to define and improve overall system architecture, so solutions scale, recover from failure and match business needs.
  • Take part in planning, code reviews and Scrum ceremonies, and deliver your share of sprint commitments.
  • Advise engineering teams on hard problems, sound design choices and consistent delivery of high-quality software.
  • Assess new technologies, tools and industry trends, and recommend which to adopt to improve engineering capability and product results.
  • Work continuously with stakeholders across the development lifecycle so technical work meets business goals and produces measurable impact.
  • Encourage technical excellence and continuous improvement by supporting knowledge sharing, engineering best practice and high standards of craft.

Requirements

  • 6 or more years of software engineering experience building and delivering production Java applications, with a firm grasp of data structures and object-oriented design.
  • Proven depth in cloud-native development and container orchestration, using Docker, Kubernetes or OpenShift over several years of delivery.
  • Extensive experience designing microservices and service-oriented architectures, including RESTful APIs and GraphQL.
  • Strong working knowledge of Java frameworks such as Spring Boot, Quarkus, Micronaut or Vert.x, used in real delivery work.
  • Hands-on practice with unit testing, automation, design patterns and peer code review as routine parts of development.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tooling such as Tekton, Harness, CircleCI or Jenkins, on-premise or in public cloud.
  • Several years working in agile and iterative delivery, actively contributing to sprints and team Scrum practice.
  • Beneficial: architecture experience designing horizontally scalable, highly available, low-latency distributed systems in cloud environments such as AWS or OpenShift.
  • Beneficial: exposure to event-driven architecture and streaming technologies such as Kafka, Spark or Flink.
  • Beneficial: familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation, and with API management platforms.
  • Beneficial: experience with observability, security and monitoring tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Splunk, ELK or CloudWatch.
  • Beneficial: experience mentoring and leading teams of five or more engineers, with exposure to React or Angular and to RDBMS and NoSQL database concepts.
  • Bachelor's or university degree required; master's degree preferred.
