Description

The company is a technology-enabled provider of asset management services for mission-critical electromechanical infrastructure across North America, founded in 1998.

It maintains, repairs, operates and engineers UPS systems, backup generators, battery energy storage systems, critical cooling systems and other electrical and mechanical equipment for renewable energy, telecom and data center clients.

The company has more than 4,000 employees at 28 U.S. locations and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the world's largest commercial real estate services and investment firm.

In this role you support the engineering team by collecting detailed telecommunications information on site, which requires working knowledge of every technical aspect of fiber networks.

You check the existing field design and layout of aerial, buried and underground fiber, plus conduit, handhole, building entrance and riser facilities, in person.

You may act as an informal lead for junior staff from time to time.

Responsibilities

  • Find, photograph and record detailed information on cables, poles, terminals, pedestals, handholes and other outside plant infrastructure.
  • Measure attachment heights, span distances, utility structures, and distances from existing or proposed outside plant facilities to centerlines, property lines and curb lines.
  • Identify power and communication facilities on utility poles, along with their owners.
  • Record bonding, grounding, guying and anchor details.
  • Send detailed field notes and photos to the engineering team.
  • Spot obstructions to fiber placement and propose a way to work around each one.
  • Apply knowledge of outside plant construction methods.
  • Read digital GIS maps, conduit records and layout drawings.
  • Use field tools such as measuring wheels, height sticks, pull finders, GPS devices, MH/HH hooks and laser rangefinders.
  • Use electronic devices such as iPads, iPhones, laptops, and file sharing and email systems.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in fiber-optic, telecommunications or telecom construction.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of outside plant work, including fiber cable design, pole line construction, conduit system design and make-ready issues.
  • Knowledge of obtaining rights of way and easements where needed, and the ability to note these clearly on field notes for desktop teams.
  • Ability to read and understand as-built prints, spot conflicts with existing outside plant facilities, and choose line and equipment routing for projects.
  • Familiarity with GIS, ESRI and shapefile functions.
  • Ability to identify utility types, potential conflicts and violations under standards such as RUS, NESC, GO95 and NEC.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors about 95% of the time, including in heat, snow, rain or wind.
  • Ability to walk up to 3 miles per day over gravel, pavement, grass and similar terrain.
  • Ability to follow OSHA, state and local safety standards.
  • Ability to work safely with or without supervision.

Conditions

Travel is extensive, up to 100% of the time, by air or vehicle, to work on numerous projects across various states.

Overnight stays of up to two weeks at a time may be required, and you must be able to travel at short notice.

Base pay ranges from $24 to $29 USD per hour.

Actual pay depends on factors such as skill set, experience and location.

Employees may also be eligible for performance and referral bonuses, production incentives, tool or fuel stipends, a company vehicle, per diem or other compensation.

The company is an equal opportunity employer and bases employment decisions on merit, competence, performance and business needs, without discrimination on any legally protected status.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive health coverage, including medical, dental and vision insurance, flexible spending accounts and an HSA option.
  • Life insurance, paid vacation and paid holidays.
  • A company-matching 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Tuition reimbursement and professional development training.
  • A family-friendly, innovative culture with room to grow.
  • A company vehicle, phone, laptop or tablet, plus the tools and safety equipment needed for the role.
