Description

The company is a technology-enabled provider of asset management for mission-critical electromechanical infrastructure across North America, covering technical maintenance, repair, operations and engineering for UPS systems, backup generators, battery energy storage systems, critical cooling and other electrical and mechanical equipment.

Serving renewable energy, telecom and data center clients, the company was founded in 1998, employs more than 4,000 people across 28 U.S. locations, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of CBRE Group, Inc., the world's largest commercial real estate services and investment firm.

In this OSP Field Engineer role you support training and engineering by collecting detailed telecommunications data at job sites. You need working knowledge of every technical aspect of fiber networks and will physically verify existing field designs and layouts for aerial, buried and underground fiber, underground conduit, handholes, building entrances and risers. You may informally guide junior staff now and then.

Responsibilities

  • Find, photograph and record details of required facilities such as cables, poles, terminals, pedestals, handholes and other outside plant infrastructure.
  • Measure attachment heights, span lengths, utility structures, and distances from existing or proposed OSP facilities to centerlines, property lines and curb lines.
  • Determine which power and communication facilities sit on utility poles and who owns them.
  • Log bonding, grounding, guying and anchor details.
  • Send detailed field notes and photos to the engineering team.
  • Spot obstacles that could block fiber placement and propose a way around each one.
  • Apply knowledge of OSP construction methods.
  • Read digital GIS maps, conduit records and layout drawings.
  • Use field tools including measuring wheels, height sticks, pull finders, GPS devices, MH/HH hooks and laser rangefinders.
  • Work with electronic devices such as iPads, iPhones, laptops, file sharing and email.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years in fiber-optic, telecommunications or telecom construction.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Understanding of outside plant work, including fiber cable design, pole line construction, conduit system design and make-ready issues.
  • Ability to obtain right-of-way and easement access where needed, and to note this clearly in field notes for desk teams.
  • Ability to read as-built prints, spot conflicts with existing outside plant, and choose routing for lines and equipment.
  • Familiarity with GIS, ESRI and shapefile functions.
  • Ability to identify utility types, possible conflicts and violations under standards such as RUS, NESC, GO95 and NEC.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors about 95% of the time, in heat, snow, rain or wind.
  • Ability to travel up to 100% of the time by air or vehicle, on short notice, across numerous projects in various states, including overnight stays of up to two weeks.
  • Ability to walk up to 3 miles per day over gravel, pavement, grass and similar terrain.
  • Ability to follow OSHA, state and local safety standards.
  • Ability to work safely with or without supervision.

Conditions

Pay is $24 to $29 USD per hour.

Actual pay depends on skill set, experience level and location.

Additional pay may include performance and referral bonuses, production incentives, tool or fuel stipends, a company vehicle and per diem.

Equal opportunity employer: hiring, promotion, discipline and discharge are based on merit, competence, performance and business needs, without regard to protected status.

Benefits

  • Family-friendly, innovative culture with room to grow.
  • Competitive pay and comprehensive health coverage, including medical, dental and vision insurance, flexible spending accounts and an HSA option.
  • Paid vacation and paid holidays.
  • 401(k) with company match, life insurance, tuition reimbursement and professional development training.
  • Company vehicle, phone, laptop or tablet, plus the tools and safety equipment the role requires.
