Description

The team works on advanced mission systems that support national security and defence operations, and the role focuses on keeping those systems performing reliably and ready to operate.

You will work with engineers, operators, government customers and technical specialists across a large, complex enterprise environment.

The role suits an experienced systems or operations engineer who likes hard technical problems, enjoys mentoring others and wants to work on cutting-edge defence technology.

Candidates who do not meet every requirement are still encouraged to apply if they are keen on the role and believe they can contribute.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the Responsible System Engineer, reviewing system performance, operational health and trend data across several systems and reporting the findings.
  • Lead investigations into operational anomalies and recovery work, and take part in on-call support so critical mission systems stay available and effective.
  • Build, maintain and extend monitoring and trending tools using Python, Perl, Linux and Grafana.
  • Review, update and check operational procedures, documentation and training material for current and future system generations.
  • Support future system development by assessing operational impact and contributing to design and engineering working groups.
  • Give technical leadership and mentoring to engineers across the team, and drive process improvements and higher operational standards.

Requirements

  • A degree in a STEM subject (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) plus relevant engineering experience, or equivalent qualifications set out in the role requirements.
  • Experience in systems engineering, operations engineering or a closely related technical field.
  • Solid working knowledge of Linux and scripting in Python, Perl or similar languages.
  • Experience analysing system performance, operational data trends and complex technical problems.
  • Ability to work effectively with teams spread across locations and within matrix organisations.
  • Clear communication, including experience explaining things to technical stakeholders, customers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Desirable: previous operations support or systems engineering experience.
  • Desirable: experience building trending and monitoring solutions with Python, Perl or Grafana.
  • Desirable: experience in defence, aerospace, mission systems or other highly regulated industries.
  • Desirable: experience leading technical work and mentoring junior engineers.
