Description

The company's Graphics team uses spatial analysis and 3-D modeling to build visual reconstructions and investigations of news events.

Past projects include building collapses, a fire, a plane crash, a mass grave inquiry in Syria and a forensic look at an earthquake-damaged building.

The role suits someone who turns raw evidence into exclusive findings and visual stories, and who moves between solo deep dives and fast collaborations across desks.

The job is based in New York and requires office attendance four days a week.

Responsibilities

  • Apply core open-source methods such as geolocation, chronolocation, satellite and aerial imagery analysis, and audio-video research.
  • Analyze satellite and aerial imagery, flight and vessel tracking data, social media and radio scanner feeds.
  • Gather and analyze evidence for quick-turn stories and longer enterprise projects across many topics.
  • Help shape visual reconstructions and investigations that use spatial analysis or 3-D modeling, working with Graphics and newsroom journalists.
  • Lead major storylines and push for new or exclusive findings across several visual formats.
  • Build and maintain a network of vetted sources.
  • Propose ideas for custom tools that automate open-source reporting and the visualization of evidence.
  • Explore computational methods, including machine learning, computer vision and approved AI tools, to report beyond standard OSINT techniques.
  • Uphold journalistic independence and the company's goal of seeking the truth and helping people understand the world.
  • You report to an Assistant Editor on the Graphics desk.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience as an investigative reporter, open-source researcher or forensic expert.
  • A proven record of open-source investigations that source audio and visual evidence across multiple platforms.
  • A strong portfolio of accountability journalism.
  • Ability to write clear copy about visual evidence on tight deadlines.
  • Experience checking user-generated social media content for authenticity.
  • Skill building timelines from official statements and metadata from user-generated content.
  • Familiarity with OSINT tools and methods such as Google Earth, satellite imagery platforms, scanner audio, flight or vessel tracking, or similar.
  • Preferred: experience working alone and with others while managing several research threads.
  • Preferred: experience with advanced reporting tools such as QGIS, Blender for 3-D scene reconstruction, data analysis methods, and audio or image forensics tools.
  • Preferred: ability to create clear visual explainers that piece together complex findings.
  • Preferred: programming and custom tool development skills.
  • Preferred: familiarity with Adobe Suite and Figma.
  • Preferred: experience with web scraping tools and APIs.
  • Preferred: experience with command line tools.
  • Preferred: willingness and flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
