Description

The Agent Data Plane team is building a new foundation for the company Agent: a Rust platform for the telemetry pipelines (logs, metrics, traces, checks and more) that run on customers' infrastructure. The platform is designed for performance, a small and predictable resource footprint and resiliency, and it will replace the Agent's current Go-based data pipelines.

This is the team's first dedicated engineering manager role. You will lead a team of five engineers, work closely with the project's technical lead, and help other Agent teams build their pipelines on the platform. The work aims to lower what customers pay to run the Agent, reduce the company's own infrastructure costs, and strengthen the Agent's performance and reliability. The codebase is open source, and the work suits technical blog posts and conference talks. As the Agent organization grows, there is room to take on wider scope and move up into higher levels of engineering management.

The company values in-person collaboration and runs a hybrid workplace so people can balance work and life in the way that suits them.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor and grow five engineers based in Madrid and the US, from early-career to senior, supporting each person's impact and career
  • Own planning and delivery for Agent Data Plane, including the phased move of the Agent's data pipelines from Go to Rust
  • Build working relationships with the teams that own the logs, metrics, traces and checks pipelines on the platform and with the APM Agent team, aligning priorities when requests compete
  • Turn Agent Data Plane into a platform other teams can build on with little support, while keeping it consistent with the project's architecture and goals
  • Work with the technical lead and senior engineers on design decisions, applying your own judgment to tradeoffs in performance, resource usage and reliability
  • Represent the team in cross-team and technical discussions and help shape the team's new on-call rotation

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience managing software engineering teams
  • At least 5 years as a strong individual contributor, with enough technical depth to earn the trust of senior engineers, including those who know more about the details than you
  • At least 2 years of hands-on systems programming in a language such as Rust, C++, Go or C
  • Experience owning systems that other teams or customers depend on, and leading a team through incidents
  • Experience leading a team through a major migration or the replacement of widely used technology, communicating clearly with affected teams
  • Experience with Rust
  • Experience building software that runs on customer infrastructure, such as agents or collectors, rather than internal services
  • Experience on a platform team whose work other teams build on
  • Experience with open source software, including working with external contributors and maintaining public repositories
  • The company welcomes people from all backgrounds. You do not need to meet every requirement on day one. If you care about technology and want to build your skills, you are encouraged to apply.
