Description

The company is a fintech that helps businesses operate and grow across borders. It was founded in 2009, has more than 2000 staff across nearly 70 cities, and offers business accounts, hedging and financing on one platform.

The engineering division in Madrid is hiring Staff Software Engineers to join a product area where you would take on high-impact work on mission-critical projects.

You would join the team from day one and ship production code within your first week.

You would work across one or more product squads with engineers, product designers and product managers, and help the team choose the hardest problems to solve and make sound trade-offs.

You would be a senior voice in engineering leadership and build strong working relationships with stakeholders across the business.

The company has an accelerated progression route for people who show exceptional performance and aptitude.

The company is looking for people who want to change how businesses work globally and shape where the company goes next.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical work across one or more critical areas, owning the design and evolution of large, business-critical systems on the global platform.
  • Set technical direction by leading system design, making high-leverage decisions and aligning teams on long-term technology strategy.
  • Work with product, design and engineering leaders to turn business goals into scalable, resilient technical solutions, shaping roadmap choices and trade-offs.
  • Take part in the whole system lifecycle, from early discovery and architecture through to production operations, reliability, performance and cost.
  • Raise engineering standards across the organisation by setting and evolving them, leading design reviews and mentoring senior engineers.
  • Spot systemic risks, technical debt and cross-team dependencies early, and drive work that improves speed, quality and resilience at scale.
  • Set clear positions on testing, CI/CD, observability and operational readiness, making sure systems are secure, compliant and production-ready.
  • Model modern engineering practice, including the responsible use of AI-assisted tools to speed up delivery and learning, while keeping a deep understanding of and ownership over everything you produce.

Requirements

  • A solid grounding in computer science or a closely related field, from formal study, industry experience or both, and evidence that you keep learning.
  • Experience working in fintech or financial services.
  • Extensive experience building and running production systems at scale. This often means 10+ years in industry, but the company values demonstrated impact, sound judgement and leadership over years served.
  • A deep understanding of core computer science, including data structures, algorithms, system design and complexity trade-offs, and the ability to apply it pragmatically to high-scale problems.
  • A proven record of designing, writing and evolving high-quality software in one or more modern programming languages, with attention to maintainability, performance and operational robustness.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to break down ambiguous, multi-dimensional problems and drive them to clear technical outcomes.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, so you can explain complex technical ideas clearly, build alignment across teams and challenge assumptions constructively at every level.
  • A collaborative leadership style, with a track record of mentoring engineers, raising technical standards and improving engineering culture beyond your own delivery.

Conditions

The role is based in Madrid on a hybrid model: 4 days in the office and 1 day working from home.

The company is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from all qualified people.

Benefits

  • Competitive pay, including a strong base salary, a performance-based bonus and a comprehensive benefits package, reflecting the scope of a senior technical leadership role.
  • A defined Staff and Principal career path with clear expectations, senior mentorship and several routes for growth, including technical leadership, architecture ownership and organisational influence.
  • Work on complex, high-leverage problems at scale, where your decisions directly affect core platforms, customer outcomes and long-term business performance.
  • Real ownership from day one of critical systems and initiatives, with the freedom to drive improvements in architecture, reliability and engineering effectiveness.
  • An inclusive engineering culture in a fast-growing global fintech, where technical excellence, careful decision-making and constructive challenge are valued and rewarded.
