Technical Lead – Backend Java Engineer 100% (f/m/d)

Description

The role is Technical Lead, Backend Java Engineer, full-time (100%), based in Madrid.

You will set the technical direction for the backend of a large Java/Jakarta EE platform on JBoss EAP and stay hands-on with the code.

The work covers backend services, integrations, platform reliability and release management. You will work with Product Owners, Architects, QA, frontend and Operations.

The team is looking for someone strong in backend engineering, clear in communication, practical in approach, and willing to mentor engineers.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain Java 21 and Jakarta EE backend applications on JBoss EAP 8.
• Make architecture decisions for REST APIs, SOAP integrations, messaging, persistence and application design that fit business and architectural needs.
• Turn business requirements into reliable, scalable and maintainable solutions with Product Owners, Architects and stakeholders.
• Own release planning, deployments, environment readiness and production rollout.
• Lead integrations built on REST, SOAP, JMS and messaging systems.
• Handle Oracle databases, including data modelling, performance tuning and schema changes.
• Coach engineers through code reviews, technical guidance and knowledge sharing.
• Drive engineering best practices, coding standards, architecture governance and continuous improvement.
• Help frontend teams when they need backend integration expertise.
• Work with QA, DevOps and Operations to deliver smoothly and keep production ready.

Requirements

• Expert Java skills, with hands-on experience in Java 21, Jakarta EE, JPA/Hibernate and multi-module Maven projects.
• A solid grasp of software architecture, design patterns and enterprise design principles.
• Experience building and consuming REST and SOAP services with JAX-RS and JAX-WS.
• Strong Oracle experience, covering SQL optimisation, schema design and data persistence.
• Experience with JMS and enterprise messaging platforms.
• Good testing practice with JUnit, Mockito and integration test frameworks.
• Experience with release management, deployment processes and production support.
• Able to lead technical discussions, make architecture calls and explain things clearly to technical and non-technical people.
• Strong skills in mentoring, coaching and code review.
• Able to balance hands-on engineering with technical leadership.
• Nice to have: Angular, TypeScript or other modern frontend frameworks, to support integration work when needed.
• Nice to have: OpenAPI Generator, API governance and contract-first development.
• Nice to have: Flyway or other database migration strategies.
• Nice to have: Splunk, OpenTelemetry and observability practices.
• Nice to have: Docker-based local development environments.
• Nice to have: Kotlin and automated integration testing frameworks.
• Nice to have: driving technical improvements, platform modernisation and process enhancements.
• Nice to have: Agile work with distributed, cross-functional teams.
