Lead Mission Systems Engineer

  • Office
  • 6+ years

Salary

$153,000 - 207,000/ year

Description

The role is based in Seal Beach, CA, with the option to work from El Segundo, CA, Aurora, CO, or Herndon, VA, at the company's Experimental Systems Group.

The group builds first-of-kind space vehicles and missions for a range of government customers, using a rapid, responsive development process that aims to deliver capabilities quickly and at a sensible cost.

The group's portfolio includes an autonomous reusable spaceplane that is now on its eighth mission.

Development timelines are tight, and the work often means solving problems that have not been solved before.

You will work as both an individual contributor and a team lead in multidisciplinary teams, and the work starts with minimally defined design spaces.

An ideal candidate has a strong technical background across spacecraft subsystems, with depth in attitude control and GNC, spacecraft operations, or mission modelling, plus a solid grasp of both space and ground systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead modelling and simulation work, taking programs from early capability studies through to demonstration.
  • Serve as a main point of contact for customers and work with subject matter experts to reach workable solutions that meet their needs.
  • Turn concepts of operations into working plans that support customer mission objectives.
  • Support technology integration and development for first-of-kind space vehicles and missions.
  • Build and present review packages to senior leaders, both inside and outside the company.
  • Build physics-based simulations to inform system trade studies and check system performance.
  • Design mission flight plans and concepts that explore new astrodynamics approaches.
  • Develop and maintain operational mission planning tools.
  • Work independently and proactively under demanding conditions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology (including manufacturing technology), computer science, data science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry, or a non-US equivalent directly related to the work.
  • Active U.S. Top Secret/SCI security clearance. A clearance that has been active within the past 24 months counts as active.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, or a comparable language.
  • 7 years of systems engineering experience.
  • 2 years of experience in a technical leadership role, such as engineering team lead, IPT lead, or technical project manager.
  • Preferred: proficiency in Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
  • Preferred: proficiency in developing control algorithms, models, and simulations.
  • Preferred: proficiency in space environments, mission design, or astrodynamics.
  • Preferred: experience working with cross-functional teams and external customers.
  • Preferred: experience with spacecraft, launch vehicles, or highly autonomous unmanned systems.

Conditions

Work is 100% onsite at one of the listed locations.

U.S. citizenship is required for the security clearance.

Export control rules require a U.S. Person as defined in 22 C.F.R. §120.62, which includes U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees.

The employer will not sponsor employment visa status.

Relocation is offered based on eligibility, and basic relocation is offered to eligible internal candidates.

Lead (Level 4) pay range is $153,000 to $207,000. Pay depends on experience, qualifications, market conditions, and business considerations.

This is not a safety sensitive position, and it is not contingent upon program award.

Shift 1, United States of America.

No language requirement.

The company is a drug-free workplace, and post-offer applicants and employees may be tested for marijuana, cocaine, opioids, amphetamines, PCP, and alcohol when criteria are met under company policy.

Benefits

  • Competitive base pay and variable compensation opportunities.
  • Eligible employees may enrol in health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance, and programs for paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Eligibility for specific programs depends on factors such as location, hire date, and collective bargaining agreements.
