Description

The lab builds a simulator that helps memory architecture and packaging teams see how their designs affect power use and heat output, without a physical prototype or lengthy computation runs.

The company makes technology used in smartphones, electric vehicles, hyperscale data centers and IoT devices.

The team is small and moves quickly, with each member owning work directly. Contributions go into platforms used across the company, and work is based on real data, real partners and production-grade results.

As a software intern, you will support research and product teams on several projects, including end-to-end simulation, regression testing and data-pipeline management. You will work with hardware, software and thermal experts on next-generation AI memory, receive mentorship and help define the scope of your work.

You will learn how the full data pipeline fits together while improving the tool's features or user experience. Skills you will build include simulation infrastructure, user interface development and power and thermal engine development.

Responsibilities

  • Build automation pipelines for simulation runs, regression testing and result tracking.
  • Implement and optimize trace-driven power-thermal simulation engines.
  • Produce transient power maps and analyze spatiotemporal hotspots, and connect the work to reduced-order and CFD-calibrated thermal solvers.
  • Build high-fidelity power macromodels for AI memory component IP in RTL, SystemC and C, using analytical methods, LUTs, FSMs, neural networks and hybrids of these.
  • Pull activity-, value- and state-dependent power features out of C, SystemC and RTL simulations.
  • Define the power-relevant functional states, using a transaction- or state-based abstraction.
  • Calibrate models with synthesis-assisted anchors, and validate them against RTL, gate-level and silicon data.
  • Bring IP-level power macromodels into system-level simulations.
  • Manage time-indexed simulation flow across the power and thermal domains.
  • Take on other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • You are pursuing a Master's or PhD in computer science, electrical and computer engineering, or a related field.
  • You have at least one academic quarter or semester left after the internship.
  • You work well in C++, and you write scripts in Python or Bash.
  • You have experience with SystemC and/or transaction-level modeling.
  • You have solid systems-level software engineering skills.
  • Preferred: experience with RTL design, synthesis and analysis research, or with Verilog, SystemVerilog or SystemC.
  • Preferred: experience with large-scale simulation or EDA or CFD-adjacent tooling.
  • Preferred: familiarity with discrete-event or time-stepped simulation architecture.
  • Preferred: experience with GPUs, computer architecture, AI memory, memory controllers, PHYs or high-speed I/O.
  • You adapt your communication style to the situation and to the varied norms of colleagues around the world.
  • You are a keen learner who meets challenges with curiosity and resilience, and you look for data to build understanding.
  • You build working relationships, offer help without being asked, and welcome new approaches.
  • You come up with creative ideas, look for new options on your own and adjust quickly when things change.

Conditions

You will be onsite every day at the San Jose headquarters, in line with the Flexible Work policy.

You report to the SVP of R&D for the Power & Thermal Lab.

The hourly base pay is $28 to $68 USD. This range covers all roles at this level across all US locations and functions, and the actual rate depends on work location, job-related knowledge, skills and experience.

The company welcomes applicants of all backgrounds and does not discriminate based on protected characteristics.

Benefits

  • Standard medical, dental and vision coverage, plus an inclusive rewards plan that supports your whole self.
  • Relocation stipend if you live more than 50 miles from your new office.
  • Monthly housing stipend for a lease during your summer internship.
  • Charitable giving match and regular volunteering opportunities.
  • On-demand wellness apps and paid therapy sessions.
  • Onsite café and gym, plus virtual fitness classes.
  • A flexible environment that lets you choose the balance that works for you.
