Description

You are an embedded software engineer who wants to work on high-assurance embedded systems. The company's Defense and Systems business is hiring a senior engineer for its Advanced Technologies team in Grand Rapids, MI.

The team is cross-functional and builds new solutions on custom hardware. Current work covers stores management, cybersecurity, networking, and sensing and signal processing.

In this senior role you will work directly with customers on the architecture, design, development, and testing of embedded software (firmware), platforms, and systems for mission-critical products. You will work alongside skilled engineers who care about building reliable embedded systems.

You need a strong background in embedded systems, close attention to detail, and a solid grasp of real-time systems and their limits. You must also take full ownership of your work and deliver high-quality software.

Responsibilities

  • Talk with customers and stakeholders to plan software features around customer needs and constraints.
  • Design, program, and develop anything from a single module to a large component, a feature set, a full feature area, or a complete embedded software product.
  • Define and document how system, hardware, software, and human integration requirements fit together.
  • Plan and carry out engineering tests, validation, and verification.
  • Work within standard software development methods and principles, and document your tasks and designs.
  • Check software designs across integration setups, from desktop simulations to fully representative flight tests.
  • Build protocols and algorithms for resource-limited environments, and work with the hardware team so modules and applications can communicate.
  • Make software robust, resilient, and fail-safe for critical devices, and reduce safety and security vulnerabilities.
  • Write detailed design and technical documentation, improve existing applications, and add new features.
  • Help set task priorities, take part in reviews of requirements, specifications, code, and designs, and mentor others across the software lifecycle.
  • Apply sound software engineering practice, and keep up with key business drivers and the product roadmap.
  • Deliver work that meets scope, cost, and schedule targets, and communicate well with every level of the organization and with customers.
  • Propose new approaches to technical problems, estimate cost and time for future bids and programs, and use hardware and software to show capability against customer expectations.

Requirements

  • Required: a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Required: 10+ years of embedded product software engineering experience, or a master's degree plus 7 years of experience.
  • Required: proficiency in Ada, C, C++, or an equivalent language.
  • Required: experience developing networking protocols, including detailed design and/or implementing protocols in embedded software or firmware.
  • Desired: a master's degree in engineering or computer science, with extensive C/C++ experience in embedded software design, development, and testing.
  • Desired: experience with Ada.
  • Desired: knowledge of scripting languages such as Python, Perl, and Tcl, and of code management tools such as Git, CVS, SVN, and Perforce.
  • Desired: experience with RTOSes such as Linux, FreeRTOS, QNX, and VxWorks, and with device drivers for complex systems using parallel processing, multi-threading, distributed processing, multi-core, SoM, signal processing, board support packages (BSP), driver development, and/or API design.
  • Desired: experience designing and implementing IPv4, IPv6, ARP, ICMP, IGMP, DHCP, TCP, UDP, and NTP.
  • Desired: experience implementing and integrating IPsec and IKE (version 1 and/or version 2).
  • Desired: experience testing, debugging, and integrating embedded software on hardware using gdb, lldb, scopes, analyzers, multimeters, UARTs, JTAGs, and oscilloscopes.
  • Desired: experience in mission-critical industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, first responder, or medical devices, turning CONOPS, specifications, or requirements into design, code, and test plans.
  • Desired: strong troubleshooting and critical thinking, with working knowledge of IDEs, version control, defect tracking, and scripting tools.
  • Desired: experience with bare metal software design and optimization for cycles and memory, plus working knowledge of compilers, build tools, and source control.
  • Desired: experience with model-based engineering in Cameo.
  • Desired: outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
