Description

You will build software end to end for the company's science and technology organization, from responsive web interfaces through the APIs, distributed services and data layers behind them.

The role leads complex technical projects and sets up early-stage products so they can iterate and grow, while promoting solid engineering practices and delivering high-quality software on tight timelines.

The work may include, but is not limited to, projects tied to the recently formed Wisconsin Tech Hub.

The company delivers cloud-based computing across cloud and edge, covering servers, databases, storage, networking, analytics, software and intelligence. The science and technology organization uses technology to make healthcare more precise, personal and accessible, and works on clinical research strategy, patient-focused innovation and new digital and machine learning capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a cross-functional team to build software products within approved architecture and the roadmap set by product management.
  • Own features from interface to backend services, APIs and data persistence, with a strong focus on quality, test-driven development and sound engineering practice.
  • Build accessible, responsive interfaces in modern JavaScript frameworks, working closely with UX to turn designs into production screens.
  • Design, build, test, deploy and maintain software that improves service performance, durability, cost and security.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated test suites, and the monitoring and observability needed to run the services you own.
  • Join software design reviews, perform peer code reviews, and give feedback to other developers on the team.
  • Hold the whole team to high quality standards for every deliverable.
  • Act as the Product Security Representative for Tech Hub, making sure the Secure Development Lifecycle is followed and that security controls, evidence and documentation are complete before each release.
  • Organize security reviews, threat models, risk assessments, penetration tests, security scans and SBOM generation, and track fixes for vulnerabilities, findings and compliance gaps.
  • Work with engineering teams on secure coding and dependency management, and track security metrics, remediation deadlines and compliance status for each component.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related discipline.
  • 4+ years of professional software development across the stack, including front-end work and modern design principles.
  • 1+ year building scalable distributed systems on a modern cloud platform such as AWS, Azure or GCP, including containerized deployments with Docker and Kubernetes or OpenShift.
  • Strong experience with a modern front-end framework such as Angular, React or Vue, plus JavaScript or TypeScript, HTML and CSS.
  • Strong experience with Java, a modern Java microservice framework such as Quarkus or Spring Boot, and JPA such as Hibernate, or an equivalent backend stack.
  • Experience using AI tools to improve engineering workflows, speed up compliance checks or help produce documentation.
  • Desired: 6+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Desired: a master's or PhD in computer science, computer engineering or a related field.
  • Desired: experience designing or architecting large-scale distributed systems, preferably on AWS.
  • Desired: experience with relational and NoSQL data stores, including schema design and query performance tuning.
  • Desired: experience with big data systems, analytics, containerized microservices, serverless functions and event-driven architecture.
  • Desired: experience with infrastructure-as-code, GitLab CI/CD tooling and supporting production deployments.
  • Desired: experience building accessible (WCAG 2.x) and internationalized user interfaces.
  • Desired: experience working directly with end customers to understand needs, find solutions and resolve disagreements constructively.
  • Desired: experience creating, documenting and communicating architecture for complex products.
  • Desired: Agile experience, including planning and tracking work, driving process improvements and automating compliance.
  • Desired: expertise across all deployment models, including public cloud and on-premises infrastructure.
  • Desired: strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn new technologies and methods.
  • Desired: experience in regulated or safety-critical software settings such as healthcare, medical devices or pharmaceuticals.
  • Desired: familiarity with design controls, traceability, audit readiness and release governance.
  • Desired: experience with secure coding standards, SAST and DAST testing, software composition analysis and secrets management.
  • Desired: a strong understanding of Secure Development Lifecycle practices.
  • Desired: experience running security reviews, threat modeling, vulnerability management and compliance activities.
