Description

The company is an energy business with several brands and 21,000 colleagues. It aims to run an energy system that does not depend on fossil fuels, and it generates, stores, moves, sells and repairs energy.

Technology drives the company's strategy. The team is modernising platforms, strengthening cyber and operational resilience, and working product-first, with engineers, data specialists and business experts delivering results quickly.

The company is moving automation and AI from proof of concept to end-to-end change. The aims are better customer journeys, lower cost to serve, faster delivery, and digital foundations for energy trading and risk, field operations and critical infrastructure.

As a software engineer on the Field Operations Platform team, you will help forecast and schedule colleague availability to meet customer demand, and send engineers with the right skills to customer sites efficiently. You will work in a Field Platform Engineering squad that builds, tests and deploys software.

The work covers complex, high-impact problems, modern engineering practice, and reusable platforms that will shape how the company operates over the next decade.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test and maintain high-quality software across the Field Operations Platform.
  • Write well-structured, secure, maintainable code that meets agreed functional and non-functional requirements and engineering standards.
  • Own the quality of your work through automated tests, peer review and prompt fixes to defects.
  • Work in a cross-functional squad with Product, QA, Architecture and Operations to deliver customer and business outcomes.
  • Join code reviews, design discussions and technical refinement, giving useful input and learning from others.
  • Help run live services by taking part in incident investigation, root cause analysis and platform improvements.
  • Follow security, compliance and data protection rules so customer and business data is handled responsibly.
  • Take ownership of agreed work items, raise risks and blockers early, and help the team deliver.
  • Keep building your skills in the platform, its tools and its domain.
  • Make technical decisions on application development, and help shape architecture and strategy across the wider product area.
  • Weigh trade-offs using product and technical judgement to improve customer impact, performance, reliability and development efficiency.
  • Use data, analytics, insight and automated test results to guide decisions and set priorities.
  • Work within engineering, security, privacy and governance frameworks, and help refine them so delivery is faster and safer.
  • Decide promptly, balancing innovation against risk so the team delivers value without losing quality.
  • Check automated outputs for accuracy, safety and ethical use.
  • Prioritise robustness, privacy, maintainability and customer trust, without tying your work to technologies that may change.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a software engineer in a cross-functional delivery team on a modern product or platform.
  • Working knowledge of source control, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and code review.
  • Experience writing secure, maintainable, well-tested code that meets performance, resilience and scalability needs.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native concepts such as event-driven architecture, asynchronous processing and managed services.
  • Experience supporting live services, including incident investigation, defect resolution and continuous improvement.
  • Understanding of security, data protection and compliance principles for customer platforms and enterprise systems.
  • Ability to analyse problems and troubleshoot, contributing to technical solutions with appropriate guidance.
  • Clear communication that lets you work well with engineers, product managers, QE and other stakeholders.
  • Hands-on experience with C,.NET Core, SQL, NoSQL, Azure Functions, Azure Data Factory, Logic Apps, Service Bus queue, Storage Account, Application Insights, Key Vault, Event Grid, Container Registry and Batch account.
  • You design, integrate and run AI-enabled solutions in enterprise settings, including prompt-driven workflows, retrieval-augmented systems and AI agents.
  • You apply structured evaluation, testing and monitoring so AI outputs are reliable, secure and compliant with organisational guardrails.
  • You prepare and manage data for AI workflows and own the responsible lifecycle of AI features, from experiments through deployment and ongoing improvement.

Benefits

  • Total rewards that let you choose what you need, when you need it.
  • Support for your finances, physical health and emotional wellbeing, along with that of your family.
