Description

The AI Engineering and Productivity team sits in the Global Planning, Design, and Product IT organization. It builds reliable, secure AI-driven tools that help Engineering and Quality teams work faster, make decisions sooner, and find useful insights across the product lifecycle.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will build data-heavy and AI-enabled applications for Product Development engineering teams. You will handle complex datasets using SQL, Databricks, Java, and Python, with a focus on data quality, speed, and dependability. You will turn detailed requirements and system specifications into working software and data solutions.

You will coach other engineers and help shape how teams use data and AI. That includes setting patterns and practices for SQL, Databricks (DBX), and AI/ML integration within VEQ, and taking an active part in modernization and cloud work.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain data-driven and AI-enabled applications and services for Product Development engineering teams.
  • Write performant SQL, including queries, functions, and stored procedures, for complex transformations and data models on enterprise platforms such as SQL Server, Oracle, and PostgreSQL.
  • Build and tune pipelines and workflows in Databricks (DBX) and related tools for batch and near real-time processing.
  • Create backend services and APIs in Java and/or Python that bring together data, business rules, and user workflows as reusable components.
  • Build enterprise-grade applications with Kubernetes/Docker, Quarkus, Java, Angular, PostgreSQL, and other company-approved tools.
  • Work with data science and AI teams to take AI/ML and LLM solutions into production, covering feature pipelines, inference integrations, monitoring, and ongoing improvement.
  • Find and fix problems in code quality, design patterns, performance, security, and data correctness using code analysis tools and remediation methods.
  • Lead or take part in solution design, including architecture, patterns, and technology choices that match company standards and the Statement of Technical Direction.
  • Champion engineering practices such as code reviews, automated testing, branching strategies, CI/CD (e.g., GitHub Actions), observability, and secure coding.
  • Work with product owners, data engineers, architects, and business stakeholders to clarify requirements, set acceptance criteria, and ship value in increments in an Agile/SCRUM setting.
  • Investigate and fix production issues across data, application, and infrastructure layers, with root cause analysis, lasting fixes, and clear write-ups.
  • Work through complex corporate processes to clear blockers and keep delivery on schedule.
  • Mentor fellow engineers and team members to build their skills in SQL, Databricks, cloud, and AI.
  • Document software and data solutions to company standards so VEQ and PD Business Systems can reuse them.

Requirements

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Required: 6+ years delivering enterprise or full stack software with Java/JEE and Python, with Angular preferred.
  • Required: 3+ years working with complex SQL queries, functions, and stored procedures, including performance tuning on large datasets.
  • Required: Experience building or supporting data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, or data-centric applications on distributed or cloud platforms such as Databricks or Spark.
  • Required: 3+ years with Kubernetes/Docker, Quarkus, and a cloud platform such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Required: Experience with Agile/SCRUM, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, and incremental delivery.
  • Required: Hands-on work with modern DevOps practices: Git/GitHub, code reviews, automated builds and testing, and CI/CD pipelines such as GitHub Actions.
  • Required: Willingness and proven ability to learn and apply AI concepts, including working with data and APIs for AI/ML and LLM solutions.
  • Required: Strong problem solving. You break complex technical and data challenges into clear steps and deliver high-quality results.
  • Required: Clear written and verbal communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Required: Ownership mindset, accountability for quality, and a focus on measurable value for internal customers.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Preferred: 10+ years delivering enterprise-grade or global, scalable software, including data-intensive or analytics-focused solutions.
  • Preferred: Deep hands-on experience with Databricks (Delta tables, notebooks, jobs, workflows) and/or Spark for data engineering, analytics, or AI workloads.
  • Preferred: Proven experience moving applications and complex data workloads to Azure or another cloud, including managed data, messaging, and API services.
  • Preferred: Experience with AI/ML initiatives, such as feature engineering, model integration, AI/LLM service integration, monitoring, and MLOps concepts.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of relational and dimensional modeling, data quality, metadata management, and data governance in an enterprise setting.
  • Preferred: Experience with observability and reliability, including logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards, alerting, and SRE concepts.
  • Preferred: Track record of shaping technical direction, setting reusable patterns and standards, and mentoring less experienced engineers.
  • Preferred: Ability to manage several initiatives at once in a quick-moving environment while keeping high engineering standards.
