Forward Deployed Engineering Lead

This role leads the Forward Deployed Engineering team in your location and works with other FDE leaders on how the function runs globally. You stay hands-on, working with major customers, writing production code, and building with your team.

Responsibilities

• Recruit, develop, and lead a team of Forward Deployed Engineers.
• Build and ship alongside your team, including writing code yourself.
• Work directly with customers to understand their workflows, needs, and hardest technical problems.
• Partner with customers building AI systems that have not been built before.
• Design, prototype, and implement solutions with your team.
• Own projects from idea through architecture, shipping, and iteration.
• Set the technical bar through architecture decisions, code reviews, and hands-on engineering.
• Turn lessons from customer deployments into core platform and product improvements.
• Work with other FDE leads on standards, playbooks, and how the function scales.
• Shape product strategy, technical decisions, and engineering culture.

Requirements

• 12+ years across software engineering, technical architecture, and customer-facing engineering.
• Experience leading and growing high-performing technical teams.
• A record of staying hands-on as your scope of leadership expanded.
• Strong full-stack skills across modern frontend and backend development.
• Strong architectural judgement and familiarity with distributed systems.
• Experience owning complex technical engagements from start to finish.
• Strong product intuition and comfort working directly with users.
• Ability to move between writing code, making architecture decisions, leading engineers, and engaging senior customer stakeholders.
• High agency and comfort working with high ambiguity and high speed.
• Nice to have: experience building a team or technical function from zero.
• Nice to have: experience with agentic AI systems or building with LLMs in production.
• Nice to have: experience leading zero-to-one product development.
• Nice to have: experience in a founding or early-stage startup.
• Nice to have: experience across high-growth startups, big tech, consulting, or enterprise AI.

Conditions

Tech stack: React and TypeScript on the frontend; Golang and Rust on the backend; Cloudflare, GCP, AWS, and multiple LLM providers in the cloud; GitHub Actions, OTEL, Grafana, Terraform, and other tools. The stack changes as what works best changes.
