Description

The company covers the North Texas food scene, and this editor role leads one of its most-read and most-engaged beats. Coverage is expanding across digital stories, social video, a weekly podcast and a growing series of top restaurant guides.

You will lead the food team as it grows. The role suits an editor who can motivate people, recognise a strong story and understand what brings readers back.

The job calls for a strategic editor who can move between fast breaking news and slower enterprise work. You should be comfortable with analytics and read audience behaviour well.

The role involves close work with the audience, audiovisual, product and marketing teams on the podcast, newsletters, alerts, social media and the restaurant guides.

The company wants a people-first leader who invests in the development of journalists and is committed to diverse hiring, sourcing and coverage that reflects North Texas.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of two food reporters, a restaurant critic and a digital producer, setting priorities and coaching each person.
  • Set the strategy for food coverage, assigning and editing stories for digital and print, running newsletters and tracking metrics to find growth.
  • Use analytics to decide story timing and placement, and share what the data shows with your team.
  • Work with editors so stories are ready to publish, with strong visuals and clear presentation.
  • Coordinate with social media, audience and photo colleagues to widen the reach of coverage.
  • Help plan coverage for major events, breaking news and enterprise projects across digital and print.
  • Help plan and coordinate video and audio work, including the weekly podcast.
  • Lead the next stage of the restaurant dining guides, building them into a must-read series.
  • Handle all people management, including recruiting, interviewing, selecting, onboarding and retaining staff.
  • Carry out regular performance reviews, giving direct feedback and coaching to build skills and accountability.
  • Apply progressive discipline and counselling when needed, in line with company policy.
  • Manage schedules, workloads and task delegation so the team stays balanced and productive.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field and at least 5 years of experience.
  • Strong news judgement, accuracy and core reporting skills, with a good eye for headlines and sharp editing.
  • A real interest in food culture that shapes thoughtful, high-impact coverage.
  • Ability to edit both quick breaking news and long-form enterprise pieces.
  • Working fluency in audience analytics and the skill to turn data into reporting decisions.
  • Experience planning digital content across desktop, mobile, social and newer platforms.
  • Strong planning and organisation, with close attention to detail.
  • A collaborative, people-first way of coaching and developing journalists.
  • Clear communication, calm under deadline pressure and the ability to work well with diverse teams.
  • A creative, forward-looking approach that supports the company's growth goals.
