This role leads an engineering team within one domain. The scope covers people, delivery, technology, finances and the wider business, and you focus on whichever area matters most at a given time.
The company is part of a group that values ambition and teamwork, and it wants people to bring their own ideas.
Responsibilities
Lead one domain team toward a high-performing setup that solves user problems and delivers measurable business value. Combine people leadership with technical judgement, work closely with Product and UX, and own the delivery and systems your team runs.
Hire, coach and develop engineers. Spot capability gaps and knowledge silos, and support both strong performers and people who need to improve.
Build trust, give direct and candid feedback, and promote learning and psychological safety. Watch morale and wellbeing, remove productivity blockers, and handle difficult conversations.
Set clear expectations, shape individual growth paths, and hold people to their commitments. Delegate with a balance of autonomy and guidance, and let the team decide in line with company priorities.
Explain management decisions, challenge ideas constructively, and back the decisions once agreed.
Manage team capacity, work in progress, output and engineering results. Plan roadmaps, milestones and capacity with Product and UX.
Plan technical initiatives, debt reduction and operational work. Define engineering excellence metrics, weigh cost against value, review design documents and refine estimates.
Keep stakeholders and other teams informed. Unblock work with alternative approaches and clear timelines, or escalate when needed.
Identify problems where machine learning could help and coordinate initiative planning with data teams.
Keep the team's systems compliant with security and regulatory requirements. Fix issues promptly or formally accept the risk.
Understand your team's services, architecture and data flows. Guide decisions on resilience, cost and performance, explain trade-offs, and contribute hands-on when time allows.
Apply threat modelling, secure design and mandatory security training. Avoid unnecessary complexity and use proven practices, platform capabilities and company engineering principles.
Set up actionable monitoring and alerting. Define and refine service level objectives with stakeholders, review reliability and performance, and act when objectives are missed.
Where on-call is needed, build sustainable rotations and shared knowledge. Follow incident and security escalation processes, run post-incident reviews and complete the follow-up actions.
Publish business data through the data platform, maintain its metadata, and take responsibility for its quality, availability and consistency.
Track infrastructure and licence costs and plan ways to reduce them, involving the group director and Finance when needed. Support budget planning, follow procurement guidelines, and align capitalisable product capacity with Finance.
Align team priorities with company strategy and stakeholder needs. Balance timing, quality and scope to maximise value and learning.
Measure the business impact of releases using product metrics, and show how the team contributes to company goals.
Join cross-team initiatives by finding improvements, defining and delivering tasks, and presenting the results.
Requirements

Experience working with mobile engineering teams and a solid understanding of React Native, including its architecture, development practices, and the difficulties of building and maintaining high-quality cross-platform apps.
Strong technical judgement and a good grasp of software architecture, operational reliability, security, and the systems your team owns.
Ability to coach, delegate, give direct feedback, and handle challenging people and leadership situations.
Experience planning capacity, delivering engineering outcomes, and working effectively with Product, UX, data teams and other stakeholders.
Understanding of business metrics, financial trade-offs and basic data science concepts, combined with clear prioritisation and communication.
