Description

The company is an engineering firm that helps clients take new ideas into production, from space and medical devices to autonomous electric vehicles. It serves aerospace, medical devices, robotics, automotive, commercial vehicles, EVs, and rail, with more than 3,000 staff across North America.

It is part of a global group of more than 57,000 engineers in 30 countries and covers product development from consulting through full project outsourcing.

The company is the first non-military unmanned aircraft company to receive FAA Type Certification (2022) and to operate under an FAA Production Certificate.

The team is looking for an Embedded Systems Engineer to make the boards, sensors, and software on the aircraft and ground stations work together reliably. You will sit between hardware and software, define interfaces, bring up new boards, and prove them through bench, hardware-in-the-loop, and flight tests.

You will work with the Electrical, Mechanical, and Onboard Software teams and with senior engineers who will help you take on more scope. Mentorship and career growth are part of the role.

Responsibilities

  • Bring new subsystems together from boards, sensors, actuators, and communication links on the aircraft and ground stations
  • Write subsystem requirements and interface definitions covering messages, timing, power, and failure behavior for CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, and BLE
  • Bring up new boards and hardware revisions with Electrical, and write the firmware and test code to exercise them
  • Plan and run verification from bench and hardware-in-the-loop tests through flight test, including test plans, acceptance criteria, and sign-off
  • Help select components and sensors through trade studies, and review schematics and designs with Electrical
  • Diagnose integration and field issues across hardware, firmware, and comms, working with Electrical, Mechanical, Onboard Software, Operations, Safety, and Production

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer, or Systems Engineering, or a related field
  • 3+ years in embedded systems, hardware/software integration, or test
  • Working knowledge of C/C++ for firmware and test tools, and Python for automation and data analysis
  • Solid understanding of CAN, SPI, I2C, and UART, and how to debug them
  • Able to read board-level schematics and datasheets and debug at the signal level with oscilloscopes and logic analyzers
  • Experience writing requirements, test plans, and acceptance criteria, and verifying a subsystem against them
  • Able to support flight test and debug systems quickly at the flight test facility
  • Clear technical communication and strong teamwork across disciplines in a fast-moving setting
  • Preferred: experience in UAV, autonomous robotics, aerospace, or other safety-critical regulated work
  • Preferred: experience with hardware-in-the-loop test setups and test automation
  • Preferred: familiarity with an autopilot stack such as ArduPilot or PX4, and with UAV or avionics technologies such as ADS-B, GPS/GNSS, LiDAR, or radar
  • Preferred: experience with embedded Linux on ARM, an RTOS, or bare-metal firmware
  • Preferred: experience with power systems, battery management systems, or smart battery ICs
  • Preferred: experience with environmental, EMI/EMC, or reliability testing
  • Preferred: familiarity with systems engineering practices such as interface control documents, requirements traceability, or FMEA
  • Preferred: experience using AI coding assistants to speed up development
  • Preferred: hands-on PCB, wiring harness, or lab prototyping experience
