Description

The role may be based in Florham Park, NJ, or Mettawa, IL.

The director sets strategy for and leads the teams covering psychiatry external expert engagement, regional marketing managers (RMMs), and promotional medical education. The job turns national brand strategy into regional execution, makes sure expert relationships produce usable insights, and makes sure peer-to-peer education meets healthcare professionals' needs in a fast-changing, competitive market. The director works across the company's enterprise functions to keep engagement, regional marketing, and education plans integrated, insight-driven, compliant, and aligned with brand priorities. Working with the wider Marketing team, Medical, Sales Leadership, Field Operations, Compliance, Finance, and agency partners, the director manages investment, improves execution, develops leaders and teams, builds scalable capabilities, and acts as a senior strategic partner on the brand and across the cross-functional team.

Responsibilities

  • Set the vision, strategy, and priorities for psychiatry external engagement, RMMs, and promotional medical education, so that work stays aligned with brand strategy, annual priorities, market needs, and business goals.
  • Lead, coach, and grow the leaders and teams behind regional marketing, expert engagement, and peer-to-peer education. Set clear priorities, ownership, and performance expectations, and build a culture of excellence, collaboration, innovation, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
  • Build a distinct expert engagement strategy that deepens relationships with established and emerging experts and widens the expert base.
  • Run the full steering committee and advisory board process, from planning, expert selection, contracting, and content through facilitation, emceeing, insight capture, sharing, and follow-up. Turn advisory board insights into concrete implications for brand strategy and execution.
  • Set and run the team's congress strategy with Marketing, Medical, Sales Leadership, and other stakeholders to raise the company's visibility, coordinate expert and leadership engagement, and improve insight capture and post-congress use.
  • Direct high-impact promotional medical education, including speaker programs, national broadcasts, regional specialty programs, speaker training, onboarding, and new learning formats that turn scientific and commercial messages into useful education for healthcare professionals.
  • Use stakeholder input, field feedback, program results, and market trends to spot gaps, guide strategy, improve content and speaker effectiveness, and inform wider brand decisions.
  • Lead complex, high-visibility initiatives with cross-functional partners and agencies. Influence senior leaders, solve business problems, and drive timely decisions and coordinated delivery across workstreams.
  • Own the integrated budget and resource plan for external engagement, RMMs, and promotional medical education, including planning, tracking, forecasting, and optimizing spend.
  • Create scalable operating models, governance, processes, and best practices that improve quality, speed, consistency, and compliance across the engagement ecosystem, following company policies and applicable external regulations.
  • Keep deep knowledge of the disease state, treatment landscape, competitors, healthcare professional needs, and relevant regulations to spot risks and opportunities early.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree is required. An advanced degree is preferred.
  • At least 8 years of relevant pharmaceutical or healthcare industry experience, including substantial marketing experience and steadily increasing leadership responsibility.
  • A proven record of leading leaders and teams. You set direction, build capability, develop talent, and get results through other people.
  • Experience leading external engagement, regional marketing, peer-to-peer education, speaker programs, or similar customer-facing marketing work is strongly preferred.
  • You can build integrated strategies and turn complex market, customer, and business insights into clear priorities and workable plans.
  • A solid understanding of pharmaceutical commercialization, healthcare professional engagement, market dynamics, and the regulatory and compliance rules for promotional activity.
  • Strong executive communication and influence skills. You can present to and align senior leaders, cross-functional partners, field teams, and external stakeholders.
  • Strong financial skills, with experience owning significant budgets, annual operating plans, resource allocation, forecasting, and investment optimization.
  • A record of leading complex cross-functional initiatives, managing competing priorities, and driving decisions in a fast-moving environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills, and a history of spotting issues early and proposing creative, practical solutions.
  • Learning agility, curiosity, sound judgment, and the ability to adapt quickly as business needs change.
  • A leadership style that is focused on excellence, optimistic, open, authentic, collaborative, and committed to innovation grounded in business reality.
  • You must be willing to travel up to 25%, including national congresses, sales and marketing meetings, external engagements, and field visits.
