Description

The station is building a small team of journalists to grow its digital storytelling, meaning original video and multiplatform content that runs on the station's web, app, YouTube, social and streaming platforms and within Chronicle and News broadcasts.

Two off-camera roles are open. One sits in the News department and centers on fast digital publishing, breaking news video, and enterprise or investigative reporting that builds on NewsCenter 5's original journalism. The other sits in Chronicle and centers on field-produced, Chronicle-style long-form stories made for digital-first release as well as broadcast use.

Responsibilities

  • Take original video stories from pitch to final edit, working mostly alone in the field.
  • Do interviews, shoot b-roll, and build narratives with strong visuals and storytelling.
  • Bring a Chronicle-style approach (tone, pacing, visual craft) or a news-enterprise approach (depth, context, follow-up) to each assigned story, based on what the story calls for.
  • Travel throughout New England, and sometimes beyond the region.
  • Work on site in person.
  • Edit short and long videos for digital platforms such as web, app, YouTube and social.
  • Turn stories quickly, including breaking news, without lowering production quality.
  • Package stories with strong titles, structure and visual hooks suited to each platform.
  • Adapt Chronicle and newsroom material for streaming, social and other digital-first formats.
  • Develop digital-first stories that go past the day's headlines, including true crime, investigative, lifestyle, archival and multi-part features.
  • Find ways to extend a story or its archival footage beyond the original reporting.
  • Spot chances to turn one story into a series or to shape stories for future broadcast compilations.
  • Track platform trends and audience behavior, and pick out stories likely to be shared.
  • Test new formats and growth tactics, measure results, and share what works with the team.
  • Help plan content using analytics, including for weekends and streaming events.
  • Work closely with digital, newsroom and Chronicle teams to reach more people.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years in video production, TV news, digital media, or documentary-style storytelling.
  • Expert-level skill in the Adobe editing suite.
  • A proven record of working independently in the field, from pitch through final edit.
  • Ability to balance speed and production quality in a high-volume setting.
  • Working understanding of platform algorithms, digital video trends, and audience behavior.
  • Strong writing skills and a firm grasp of AP style.
  • Nice to have: experience producing serialized, episodic or multi-part digital content.
  • Nice to have: experience optimizing content for YouTube and social platforms.
  • Nice to have: familiarity with using archival content to add context or retell past stories in new formats.
  • Nice to have: experience developing or supporting strategy for streaming events with on-air talent.

Conditions

The estimated base salary is $76,000 to $90,000. The actual offer depends on factors such as transferable skills, experience, business needs, market conditions, geographic location where the work is done, and other factors permitted by law. The range may change over time.

Equal-opportunity statement: the station values diverse backgrounds, perspectives and identities, and fosters collaboration and open communication to keep its content accurate and connected to its communities.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) with company matching.
  • Emotional wellness support.
  • Paid time off.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • LGBTQ+ health services.
  • Additional benefits for you and your family's needs, available to you, your spouse or partner, and dependents.
