Description

The North and South Europe Grid System Integration team delivers a wide range of high voltage AC and DC transmission projects and is hiring a Design Quality and System Engineering Manager.

Projects are large and complex, built with many processes that must stay current, suit their purpose and be applied consistently across the whole project life.

This role applies a systems engineering approach, makes sure those processes work together efficiently, and keeps interfaces and requirements fully managed.

The role leads three areas: design quality management, systems engineering, and Zero Defect framework management.

Responsibilities

  • Audit how the engineering team applies its processes during both tender and project delivery, record any non-conformances, and manage short and long term corrective actions.
  • Update existing procedures to improve efficiency and keep them maintained, and spot process gaps and write new procedures to close them.
  • Coordinate engineering processes inside the engineering function and with the rest of the business.
  • Represent the North and South Europe region at global level in building and rolling out central high-level engineering procedures.
  • Help introduce continuous improvement actions into process development and deployment.
  • Keep engineering teams trained on how processes apply and what the business expects of them.
  • Lead the capture and reuse of lessons from current and past projects.
  • Run regular return of experience meetings throughout each project to record what was learned.
  • Hold ad-hoc and scheduled sessions to share best practice, quality concerns and lessons learned.
  • Turn lessons from good and bad project outcomes into process changes.
  • Make sure engineering processes consider the whole system and focus strongly on interface management and integration at every project life cycle stage.
  • Lead the small team of requirements engineers and make sure every tender and project has its requirements captured, managed and validated correctly.
  • Lead the rollout of the company Zero Defect framework in the GSI NSE engineering approach, a management philosophy that prevents errors by getting work right the first time.
  • Start by improving design risk management and design verification and validation.

Requirements

  • A first degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Significant experience in a role exposed to project delivery, with familiarity with the processes and procedures used to deliver large capital projects.
  • Experience with quality systems and process auditing, and the ability to apply process improvement techniques and tools.
  • Regular experience writing business processes and procedures and training their users.
  • Working knowledge of ISO9001:2015.
  • Solid understanding of systems engineering principles, such as those set out by INCOSE.
  • A systematic, disciplined approach, and the ability to present information clearly.
  • Confidence discussing issues with internal stakeholders and subject matter experts, and proposing fixes or efficiency gains.
  • A team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills who manages their own work, stays flexible and resilient, and keeps learning.
