Description

The company is a San Francisco newspaper seeking a Deputy Editor for Breaking News and Live to expand how it covers news in real time and to run its live news operation.

The role has two main parts: monitoring, assigning and editing breaking news each day, and growing the company's live coverage.

You will help decide what matters now, how fast to respond and how to serve readers as a story unfolds, working under senior leadership to build a steadier live journalism operation.

Formats may include live blogs, rolling updates, real-time explainers, event coverage and alerts. Strong interest in artificial intelligence tools and automated systems for finding and delivering breaking news is especially valued.

You will report to the Breaking News Editor and work closely with the audience team on live coverage. This is a full-time, hybrid position based in San Francisco. Nights, weekends and holidays are part of a rotating breaking-news and live-coverage schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Watch for breaking news and emerging developments, then assign and edit those stories.
  • Start and edit live blogs and other rolling coverage.
  • Shape a changing editorial approach to live journalism.
  • Find chances to add more live coverage across breaking news, elections, severe weather, major public events, sports and other high-interest moments.
  • Use audience data to judge live coverage and refine its format, timing, reach and usefulness.
  • Test live storytelling formats, tools and workflows across the web, app, alerts, newsletters and social platforms.
  • Take a turn on the editing rotation, which may cover nights, weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • At least two years of experience as a reporter or editor at a daily newspaper, magazine or web publication, or equivalent.
  • Strong news judgment and a feel for what matters to Bay Area readers.
  • Hands-on experience with live blogs, rolling coverage, real-time updates or other continuous digital journalism.
  • Excellent editing, headline writing and digital production skills.
  • Understanding of how to use real-time data and audience signals to guide editorial decisions.

Conditions

The company does not sponsor immigration. You must have the right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

The base salary range is $80,000 to $100,000 USD, the company's good-faith estimate for this role in the posted location. Final pay depends on lawful, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, training, certifications, education, location and market.

Applications for accommodation can be sent to the company's site, which is only for accommodation requests.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental and vision coverage for you and your family.
  • Competitive retirement plan with a matching program in most markets.
  • Ample paid time off, including holidays and vacation.
  • Paid parental leave for new parents and growing families.
  • Monthly reimbursement for child and dependent care.
  • Mental wellness benefits.
  • Inclusive healthcare suited to individual needs, including LGBTQ+ services.
  • Fertility coverage and menopause support.
  • Pet wellness reimbursement and Rover credits.
  • Additional benefits are available; details are on the company's benefits page.
