Description

Join the multi-port system design engineering team, which helped bring the company's latest surgical system to market and is now working on its successor.

The systems analyst role for robotic algorithms and control is central to designing, developing and supporting new products in the company's surgical product line.

You will mainly own the tele-robotic motion control algorithms, robotic manipulator control, interaction behaviors and safety algorithms for new surgical robots and instruments.

The work spans electrical, mechanical, software, control, user interface and safety engineering, where all subsystems come together.

You will give early design input, prove out new designs quickly, and solve subtle integration and motion control problems.

Your involvement continues until the products reach customers with the required quality and reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Help shape new surgical platforms and instruments by analyzing control systems and characterizing prototypes.
  • Design and implement motion algorithms and behaviors.
  • Apply control theory to design and verify mechatronic and tele-robotic systems.
  • Analyze complex electro-mechanical devices for dynamic safety and clinical risk.
  • Build safety monitoring algorithms grounded in sound physics.
  • Take part in clinical observations and experiments to confirm that performance requirements are relevant, measurable and realistic.
  • Document inventions and pursue intellectual property.
  • Report system performance to the wider organization.
  • Improve team workflow by building tools and teaching colleagues.
  • Monitor and track system performance from design through manufacturing.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of classical and modern control theory, with hands-on experience implementing control systems in safety-critical products.
  • Demonstrated experience with robotic manipulation algorithms, including learning-based and machine learning approaches.
  • Strong embedded C/C++ skills and experience integrating hardware, firmware or software, and mechanisms.
  • Strong engineering intuition for mechatronic systems, with attention to detail and the drive to see solutions through to completion.
  • Ability to thrive in a high-energy team, with strong written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating on project planning, execution and communication.
  • Commitment to product quality and continuous improvement.
  • Either a Master's degree and 3 years of experience, a PhD and 1 year of experience, or equivalent experience.

Conditions

The company and/or your customers may require current proof of vaccination against certain diseases, including COVID-19; requirements vary by role.

Some roles may be subject to U.S. export controls for prospective employees who are nationals of countries under embargo or sanctions; licensing can take 3 to 6+ months, and a Technology Control Plan typically adds about 2 weeks to hiring.

For export-controlled roles, final offers depend on an approved export license and/or an executed Technology Control Plan before the start date; these timelines may or may not be flexible, and candidates will be told of any steps required.

Applicants with arrest and conviction records will be considered in accordance with fair chance laws.

Preference goes to qualified candidates who do not live, and do not plan to live, in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina or Tennessee.

The role may be filled at a different job level than listed, depending on business need and the selected candidate's experience, knowledge and skills.

Pay will be based mainly on the job level at which the role is filled and the candidate's qualifications, consistent with applicable law.
