Description

The company is the company, which provides trusted local news and services through 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, reaching more than 100 million people monthly across the web, mobile apps, streaming and linear television.

WNEP-TV, the ABC affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, is hiring a Story Desk Editor to plan and coordinate on-air and online news coverage across its 17-county viewing area in northeastern and central Pennsylvania. You decide which stories get covered, screen phone and email tips, and track updates on breaking and developing news. You will also create content for the station's digital platforms, including its website and social media pages.

Responsibilities

  • Respond quickly to breaking news and deploy crews efficiently.
  • Plan timing and logistics so selected stories are covered well with the staff available.
  • Scan news releases, police and fire scanners, social media and other local outlets for story ideas, and know how their codes and operations work.
  • Call local agencies such as police departments and courts to keep up with their beats.
  • Speak for the station with other media organizations on pool coverage and access matters.
  • Plan the longer term: track major stories and possible follow-ups, and build the newsroom calendar.
  • Guide editorial decisions and organize logistics for the day's newsroom content.
  • Find trending story angles across several social media platforms.
  • Source story ideas from viewer photo and video submissions and from social media.
  • Write digital content from field crew reports, news releases and other material.
  • Work with the digital team and field crews to update stories with new facts, video and images.
  • Livestream breaking news and severe weather coverage on digital and social platforms.
  • Locate criminal and civil court documents and pass them to news and digital producers.
  • Keep current on key political, community and business leaders.
  • Use audience data and metrics to shape content planning and execution.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree is preferred, but equivalent experience is accepted.
  • One to three years of experience as a newsroom assignment editor.
  • Willingness to work nights, early mornings, weekends, overtime and breaking news shifts as needed.
  • Strong written and spoken communication, plus skill at resolving conflict and working with people.
  • Knowledge of AP Style is an advantage.

Conditions

Pay is $20 to $23 USD per hour.

Equal opportunity employer.

Benefits

  • Medical coverage with two plan options through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas for full- and part-time staff, plus dental, eye care, fertility, surrogacy and adoption assistance, and disability and life insurance.
  • 401(k) where you can contribute 1% to 80% of pay before tax; the company matches 100% of the first 4% of pay, vested from day one.
  • All employees and eligible family members get nine free virtual doctor visits through Teladoc and 12 free annual therapy sessions through Spring Health, whether or not they join the medical plans.
  • Paid time off plus nine paid holidays each year.
  • Some roles fall under a collective bargaining agreement, so some or all of these benefits may not apply; certain newsroom union members have health and retirement coverage through union-run plans.
