Description

The company builds systems for defense and survivability work. This Staff Systems Engineer role focuses on nuclear hardness and survivability (NH&S) for the Technology Maturation and Risk Reduction (TMRR) phase, with a software-focused systems engineering lead. The position is based in Roy, Utah, and is at T05 level.

Relocation assistance may be available. A Secret clearance is required for start. Travel is 10% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Lead software-focused systems engineering during the TMRR phase, keeping work aligned with program technical, cost, and schedule goals.
  • Handle technical planning, break down requirements, allocate them, and define interfaces for software and software-intensive subsystems, turning customer requirements into specifications that can be built.
  • Define and assess NH&S environments and requirements, then carry them into software, firmware, and hardware/software interface designs.
  • Model radiation transport and simulate it, and support analysis of radiation effects on semiconductors and software-controlled electronics (such as TID, NDD, dose-rate, and SEE) to inform architecture and design trade decisions.
  • Perform radiation effects circuit analysis, ground shock and thermal effects analysis, and assess EMP, EMI, and EMC impacts on electronics and software-controlled systems.
  • Plan, coordinate, and support NH&S and EEE parts qualification testing (for example under MIL-STD-750, MIL-STD-883, MIL-STD-464, or similar), including test definition, procedures, data review, and results analysis for semiconductors, subsystems, and equipment.
  • Lead or take part in NH&S design reviews and software-focused systems design reviews for survivable systems, drive actions to closure, and make sure verification and validation approaches are sound.
  • Work across systems, software, hardware, EEE, radiation effects, and test teams, plus customer and stakeholder groups, to resolve complex technical issues.
  • Run detailed trade studies, modeling, and analysis using scripting tools such as MATLAB or Python and circuit modeling tools such as PSPICE, to evaluate and optimize survivability, performance, and implementation options.
  • Act as technical leader and subject matter expert on NH&S systems engineering for cruise missile applications, advising management and customers on advanced concepts, research, and applications.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university and 12 years of relevant experience, or a master's degree and 10 years of relevant experience, or a PhD and 8 years of relevant experience.
  • US citizenship and an active U.S. Government Secret clearance at the time of application, current and within scope, with an investigation date within the last 6 years.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance and Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a reasonable time, as the company determines its business needs require.
  • Experience running NH&S design reviews for survivable or strategic weapon systems, including turning nuclear effects environments into system and software requirements.
  • Experience with MIL-STD-750, MIL-STD-464, and MIL-STD-883 testing, or similar qualification and verification testing of EEE parts, circuit card assemblies, or subsystems.
  • Working knowledge of nuclear weapons effects and related testing (such as TID, NDD, dose-rate, SEE, and EMP/EMI/EMC) and how they affect electronics and software-controlled systems.
  • Skill in scripting or high-level languages such as MATLAB or Python for data analysis, modeling, or automation, plus experience modeling semiconductor radiation effects with PSPICE or similar tools.
  • Preferred: active DoD Top Secret clearance.
  • Preferred: master's degree in electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a closely related STEM field from an accredited institution.
  • Preferred: experience with embedded hardware and software qualification testing for circuit card assemblies and subassemblies, covering requirements verification, test procedure development, and defect or issue resolution.
  • Preferred: familiarity with military standards for survivable systems and electronics, such as MIL-STD-1766C, MIL-STD-461, and related NH&S, EMI, EMC, and qualification standards.
  • Preferred: experience with radiation shielding design against photons and/or neutrons, including verification modeling with MCNP or GEANT4.
  • Preferred: clear written and verbal communication of complex technical ideas, time management to meet program schedules, and prior support of cruise missile or similar weapon systems.
