Description

This staff software engineer role sits in platform engineering, where you would build platform capabilities for a sub-organization or technical area, covering infrastructure, tooling and ML frameworks.

The team builds AI-driven applications and intelligent automation features, so the work mixes platform and product development.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver platform capabilities for your area, such as CI/CD, SDKs, model runtimes and feature stores.
  • Line up engineering work with roadmap milestones and domain priorities so delivery stays coherent.
  • Apply cloud-native principles like microservices, containers and automation to get scalable, resilient and agile systems.
  • Own features end to end: coding, testing, CI/CD deployment, observability, monitoring and upkeep.
  • Build infrastructure and tooling that speeds up engineers and improves developer experience.
  • Run system design reviews to check feasibility, quality and fit with project goals and architectural practice.
  • Build AI-driven applications and intelligent automation features in JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, Rust, Dart or C++.
  • Integrate AI agents and ML components that handle multi-step reasoning and automation, using tools such as GitHub Copilot.
  • Apply design patterns so solutions are secure, maintainable, modular and scalable.
  • Mentor engineers and junior leaders on technical growth, psychological safety and continuous learning.
  • Shape architecture and technical choices toward standardization, reuse and long-term sustainability.
  • Support teammates through delegation, documentation, tool selection and design guidance.
  • Work with product and business stakeholders to turn complex user problems into concrete technical requirements.
  • Split work into well-scoped units that engineers can pick up right away.
  • Use data to define and track success metrics, improve processes and keep engineering quality high.
  • Contribute to API design and prototypes to test ideas and gather early feedback.
  • Lead correction-of-error reviews to raise code quality and reduce repeat defects.
  • Track industry trends and share knowledge through documentation, tool evaluations and internal talks.
  • Own deliverables so they meet quality standards and business goals, and push issues through to completion.
  • Make sound technical decisions that weigh trade-offs and long-term effects on architecture and business goals.
  • Adapt to change, pick up new technologies, understand the wider system and act on feedback.
  • Communicate complex ideas clearly to technical and non-technical audiences and share knowledge openly.
  • Look for ways to improve processes, tools and products, and encourage experimentation.
  • Drive several business plans at once: identify needs, set priorities, remove blockers, provide resources, measure progress, adjust and plan for contingencies.
  • Supervise and develop associates by selecting and training them, mentoring, assigning work, setting expectations, running regular reviews, recognising results and coaching for improvement.
  • Train others on company policies, values and ethics, make sure they are followed, and support the Open Door Policy.
  • Check that business needs are met by reviewing plans and programs, consulting partners and managers, weighing suggestions for efficiency and cost, and joining community outreach.
  • Respect people: build a high-performing team, value differences, create a sense of belonging, and attract and keep strong talent.
  • Develop talent through feedback, coaching, mentoring and growth opportunities, and recognise others' contributions regularly.
  • Build trusting relationships with team members and partners, work across functions, and listen and communicate with energy to motivate.
  • Uphold high standards of integrity, ethics and compliance, model company values and lead by example, including the company's goal of a positive impact on associates, customers and communities.
  • Follow the law, the code of conduct and company policy, hold yourself and others accountable, and encourage people to raise concerns without fear of retaliation.
  • Lead as a humble, self-aware, honest and transparent servant leader.
  • Put customers and members first, apply an omni-merchant mindset and an Every Day Low-Cost mindset to deliver value and Every Day Low Prices.
  • Use data, analytics, customer insights and a view across the business when setting plans and team strategy.
  • Keep raising the bar: seek feedback, ask good questions, learn from mistakes, take smart risks and bounce back from setbacks.
  • Keep finding improvements and encourage the team to adopt new digital tools and ways of working.

Requirements

  • Minimum: a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering or a related area, plus 4 years of software engineering or related experience.
  • Minimum, as an alternative: 6 years of software engineering or related experience, with no degree required.
  • Preferred: a master's degree in one of the same fields plus 2 years of software engineering or related experience.
  • Preferred: experience building inclusive digital experiences and knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA, assistive technologies and digital accessibility. The ideal candidate knows accessibility best practices and helps the company keep building accessible products and services under its accessibility standards and guidelines for an inclusive culture.
