Description

The company connects people with product ideas to manufacturers who can make them, and runs a digital marketplace that helps manufacturers grow while letting buyers at Fortune 1000 companies access manufacturing capacity around the world.

The company also runs an industrial platform, part of the same business, where millions of buyers find and source from manufacturers and suppliers in North America.

The Thomas engineering team is moving from a traditional supplier directory toward AI-assisted sourcing. This Staff Software Engineer role is a senior individual contributor position that guides implementation across several engineering teams and shapes decisions across the technology organization. You will set technical direction for the shared systems and AI infrastructure this shift relies on, and you will keep writing code.

Responsibilities

  • Write and review architecture plans for new projects, then help the teams build them.
  • Set direction on which technologies to adopt, knowing when to keep proven tools and when to switch, including how AI is used across the platform.
  • Mentor engineers across the organization and help them build their skills.
  • Review code and help others across the organization become strong code reviewers.
  • Ship reliable, high-quality software that meets customer expectations and fits business deadlines.
  • Work closely with product managers, designers, and leadership to keep communication open, collaboration strong, and standards high.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of professional software development experience, including owning outcomes, setting technical direction across teams, mentoring engineers at every level, and influencing product and business decisions.
  • Strong full-stack skills that carry over to the team's stack: backend services in TypeScript and Node.js with GraphQL APIs, a React and Next.js frontend, PostgreSQL and analytical data stores, and search tools such as OpenSearch, at production scale. Experience with another modern stack is just as valuable, and you do not need prior experience with the exact tools used here.
  • Hands-on experience building AI products, such as LLM applications, retrieval-augmented generation, vector search, or embedding models. The team wants engineers who build with these tools and rigorously evaluate their output, regardless of the specific frameworks.
  • Depth in areas the platform is expanding into, such as multimodal (image and text) embeddings and search, agent orchestration frameworks (e.g. LangGraph, LangChain), and model fine-tuning and adaptation, using deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • You learn quickly, take initiative, work fluently in an AI-native development environment, and share what you learn with others.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, from junior engineers to executives.
  • Marketplace or multi-sided platform experience is highly desirable, along with an understanding of how shared platforms scale.

Conditions

The role is hybrid. The posting is labeled LI-Hybrid.

The estimated base salary for new hires is $176,250 to $182,500 per year, plus an annual bonus. Final pay depends on factors such as job-related skills, relevant experience, and location.

Total compensation includes base salary, bonus, and equity.

Applicants are considered regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran status, or disability status.

Benefits

  • 401(k) match
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Paid time off, including vacation, sick leave, floating and fixed holidays
  • Maternity and bonding leave
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and other wellbeing resources
  • A stipend for catered lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays
