Description

This Staff Software Engineer role sits on the Developer Experience team, which works where developer tooling, data and business strategy meet. The team builds tools, platforms, metrics and enablement programs that reduce friction for engineers, speed up software delivery and raise developer satisfaction and productivity across the company.

Your focus is developer productivity and insights. You will help define how the company measures engineering effectiveness, combine signals from software delivery systems with platform and product teams, and turn those findings into clear recommendations for senior engineering leaders, including the CISO office. You will mostly lead through influence rather than owning one platform: shaping the metrics strategy, defining and evolving golden paths, assessing how AI changes developer work, and using data to improve tools and outcomes.

The team is moving the company from a traditional IT model to an AI-native engineering organisation. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will help lead that shift by building automation, golden paths and AI-driven solutions that remove friction, while mentoring and upskilling engineers across IT.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction for platforms, tools and workflows, and see the delivery through, aiming for better productivity, quality and satisfaction for engineers.
  • Create opinionated paved-road golden paths covering repository structure, CI/CD, testing, security, observability and deployment.
  • Build automation and self-service tools that cut manual toil, such as environment provisioning, pipeline setup, guardrail enforcement and standards checks.
  • Bring AI into engineering work, including agents and copilots that help with planning, coding, testing, documentation and operations.
  • Work with product, security, infrastructure and application teams to find pain points and turn them into concrete platform and tooling changes.
  • Multiply the impact of others by mentoring and coaching engineers on software engineering, AI-assisted development and recommended practices.
  • Define and track outcome metrics such as lead time for changes, PR cycle time, change failure rate and developer satisfaction, and use them to guide investment.
  • Shape the engineering standards, patterns and reference architectures used across Core IT and beyond.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of software development experience.
  • Strong skill in at least one modern language, such as Java, Go, C, Python or TypeScript, and experience designing, building and running distributed systems in production.
  • Deep experience with modern CI/CD pipelines and release processes, including build, test, deploy, release strategies, rollback and environment promotion.
  • Hands-on work with developer platforms and SDLC tooling, such as GitHub or GitLab, CI/CD systems, Jira or ADO, artifact repositories, secrets management and feature flags.
  • Solid grasp of at least one major cloud platform (Azure, AWS or GCP) and of infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform, Bicep or CloudFormation.
  • Good understanding of security, compliance and governance for developer platforms, including RBAC, auditability and data boundaries.
  • Experience with migration and modernisation, such as moving from on-prem to cloud, replacing legacy systems with modern pipelines, or consolidating tools.
  • Proven experience as a Staff Engineer or senior technical leader setting strategy and delivering across several teams.
  • A systems mindset and product thinking: you treat developers as customers and build solutions that are intuitive, resilient and maintainable.
  • An AI-native approach, with experience using and integrating AI and ML into engineering work, such as AI coding assistants, agentic workflows or intelligent automation, or strong evidence that you can ramp up quickly.
  • Technical leadership without formal authority, shown through mentoring, leading design reviews, influencing roadmaps and aligning teams.
  • Clear communication, including explaining technical trade-offs and building trust with engineers, managers and partners.
  • Preferred qualification: experience in platform engineering, SRE or internal developer platforms.
  • Preferred qualification: background in large, regulated or safety-critical environments where security, compliance and reliability are core concerns.
  • Preferred qualification: prior work in Developer Experience, Developer Productivity or DevTools organisations.

Conditions

The role is hybrid, with 3 days a week on site, Tuesday through Thursday, at the Austin, TX IT Innovation Center or the Warren, Michigan Technical Center 3.
