Description

You will join the Retail Transaction domain as a Staff Software Engineer, leading two engineering teams that own one of the most important customer journeys at the company.

Your work covers checkout across web, backend and, over time, native mobile, and connects to payments, orders and shipping.

The company is Europe's leading e-pharmacy, and the solutions you help build serve millions of customers across Europe.

Tech stack: React.js, Next.js, Java, Spring Boot, SwiftUI, Swift, Kotlin, Android SDK, ES6, ESI, Varnish, Docker, Google Cloud, Kubernetes.

Responsibilities

  • Set architectural direction for the Transaction domain across two teams and neighbouring domains, designing scalable distributed systems that span frontend and backend.
  • Lead difficult architecture decisions by weighing performance, security, reliability, maintainability and cost against data, and identify risks that reach beyond one team.
  • Stay hands-on in frontend and backend, building customer-facing features in React and backend capabilities in Java.
  • Take part from early discovery and system design through to production, and help lay the groundwork for native iOS and Android checkout.
  • Drive adoption of standards for architecture, performance, security, testing, observability and reliability across teams, turning recurring problems into shared patterns, guidelines and platform capabilities.
  • Align Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping and other dependent teams where ownership and priorities overlap.
  • Mentor engineers and run architecture and design discussions, guiding decisions without formal authority.
  • Work with Product, UX and engineering leadership to find opportunities, test assumptions and turn business needs into technical strategy, deciding when to evolve existing systems or adopt new technology.

Requirements

  • Deep hands-on frontend experience with React and TypeScript, plus professional backend experience in at least one language or framework, such as Node.js, Java, Python or similar.
  • Comfortable working across the full stack, contributing to production backend services and APIs and owning customer-facing applications.
  • Experience at Staff or Principal level, or equivalent technical scope, designing complex systems and driving architecture that affects several teams or domains.
  • Other senior engineers seek your input, and you can build technical agreement when requirements, constraints and opinions compete.
  • A proven record of leading through influence and developing engineers: mentoring experienced people, facilitating design discussions, introducing standards and enabling teams to decide well without becoming a bottleneck.
  • Strong business and product judgement alongside technical depth. You work well with Product, UX, Security, SRE and engineering stakeholders, use metrics to guide choices, and think about the best outcome for the wider organisation.
  • Strong plus: experience with checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce or marketplace systems.
  • Valuable: exposure to native Android with Kotlin or iOS with Swift, as the domain moves in that direction.

Conditions

Remote position based in Germany.

Occasional on-site collaboration at the Berlin or Cologne offices may be required, depending on business and team needs.

Benefits

  • Urban Sports Club membership, M package, giving access to a wide range of sports offers.
  • Work-from-home arrangements set individually where the role does not require office presence, including up to 20 days a year from anywhere in the EU.
  • Fully covered Deutschland Ticket, usable at any time.
  • Support for individual development through internal and external training.
  • 30 days paid vacation per year, plus an extra day on Rosenmontag, and the option of up to 10 days unpaid vacation after one year.
  • 10% employee discount on over-the-counter, beauty and personal care products in the online store, and 20% discount at nu3.
