Description

The company's Space Systems Sector is hiring a Staff Systems Engineer, Level 5, based in Redondo Beach, CA.

You will define, integrate and verify system-to-system interfaces across complex space architectures and own the technical baseline for external links between payloads, spacecraft buses, ground segments and outside mission partners, so everything interoperates and meets program requirements.

You will work with systems engineering, hardware, software and customer teams to break down requirements, produce interface control documentation and resolve integration problems across the program lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical definition and control of external interfaces for assigned subsystems and segments, covering space, ground and cross-segment links, and help manage the technical baseline with engineering design teams.
  • Write and baseline Interface Control Documents, Interface Requirement Specifications and other configuration-managed artifacts.
  • Break system requirements down into interface requirements and assign them to subsystems and components.
  • Lead or join interface working groups, design reviews and technical interchange meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Keep interfaces current in the DOORS database and move documentation into digital transformation efforts.
  • Support several engineering insertions at once and keep their maturity levels synchronized.
  • Define mechanical, electrical, data, RF and software interfaces together, keeping them consistent and traceable.
  • Run interface compatibility checks, margin analyses and trade studies to inform architecture and design decisions.
  • Help plan integration and test for interface verification, including test configurations, procedures and success criteria.
  • Find and resolve interface problems during integration and test, triage anomalies and recommend corrective actions.
  • Keep interface designs and documents aligned with changing requirements, configuration updates and customer constraints.
  • Help identify interface risks and plan how to reduce them.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to program leadership, customers and cross-functional teams.
  • Review RFCs for possible impacts and share them internally to shape program responses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field with 12+ years of engineering experience, or a Master's degree in a STEM field with 10 years of experience, or a PhD in a STEM field with 8 years of experience.
  • Active SCI clearance at the time you apply.
  • 12+ years of experience in systems engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience defining, managing and controlling external interfaces and their documentation, including ICDs, IRDs and specifications, under configuration control.
  • Experience on space systems programs involving spacecraft, payloads, ground segments or mission operations.
  • Familiarity with interface standards and best practices for space and ground systems.
  • Experience working with customer and partner organizations on joint interface definition and control.
  • Familiarity with requirements management tools such as DOORS, plus model-based or structured systems engineering practices.
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles and processes.
  • Clear written and spoken communication, including written requirements, test plans and evaluation criteria.
  • Preferred: experience developing test procedures, planning tests, or working on integration and test.
  • Preferred: familiarity with SysML and UML model-driven systems engineering languages and concepts, with CORE knowledge as a plus.
  • Preferred: strong technical writing and team-building skills.
  • Preferred: experience troubleshooting complex systems.
  • Preferred: experience working on a diverse team in a demanding, quick-moving environment.
