Staff Data Platform Software Engineer - Persistence

Description

The company is hiring a senior engineer for its Platform Persistence group to manage how data is kept and governed across its full lifecycle on the company's platform.

The team works on high-visibility projects that executive leadership follows closely.

You would help shape the data architecture so that platform data is stored, retrieved and managed efficiently.

The team also focuses on telemetry and data visualization, affecting how customer and platform data is used and presented.

Responsibilities

• Write highly scalable code that handles concurrency and memory use well.
• Help define data management strategy with a focus on scale, efficiency and security.
• Work with cross-functional teams to deliver data initiatives.
• Investigate hard data problems, including detecting and recovering from data loss.
• Promote data best practices and security standards across the organization.
• Monitor data performance and troubleshoot and improve it where needed.
• Keep up with storage and management technology, including distributed storage such as S3 and Apache Iceberg, and Kubernetes-based deployments.
• Use AI tools to tackle data and distributed systems problems at scale, setting sound guardrails and processes for AI-led software development.
• Foster a culture of innovation and ongoing improvement.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software development experience with a Bachelor's degree, 5+ years with a Master's degree, 3+ years with a PhD, or equivalent work experience.
• Proficiency in Java and strong skills in data structures and algorithms.
• Proficiency with concurrency and parallel programming.
• Working knowledge of databases, data modeling and data storage technologies.
• Strong experience with relational databases handling large volumes of data.
• Deep knowledge of Kubernetes; hands-on experience deploying services on Kubernetes is a strong plus.
• Working knowledge of distributed storage systems such as S3 and Apache Iceberg.
• Strong understanding of cloud-based and distributed systems.
• Familiarity with the company's platform is a plus.
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
• Working knowledge of JavaScript is beneficial for collaborating with other teams.
• Experience with AI-assisted development tools and awareness of related guardrails and processes is a plus.

Conditions

Base pay ranges from $176,100 to $308,200, plus equity (when applicable), variable or incentive compensation, and benefits.

The base pay shown is a guideline; individual total compensation depends on qualifications, skill level, competencies and work location, and is based on the geographic location where the role sits and may change.

This is a flexible hybrid role requiring 2 days per week in a company office. Offices are in San Francisco, CA; Pleasanton, CA; Santa Clara, CA; and San Diego, CA.

Work personas (flexible, remote or required in office) are assigned based on the nature of the work and work location. The company may use a third-party service to measure the distance between your home and the nearest office.
