Specialist, Software Engineer – IBM ACE & ETL

  • Hybrid

Salary

$95,500/ year

Description

The company is a Fortune 100 business with nearly $70 billion in annual sales, and its technology team wants an engineer to strengthen and modernize the integrations behind its commercial insurance lines.

This Specialist Software Engineer role centers on IBM App Connect Enterprise (ACE) and Informatica ETL.

Integrations move policy transaction data reliably between PolicyCenter, internal applications, downstream platforms, vendors and regulators.

ACE handles real-time messaging, API and service integration, while Informatica ETL extracts, transforms and loads data from operational systems, analytics, files and vendors. You will build skills across both.

As a software engineer, you will deliver technology solutions to business partners by building new applications or changing and supporting packaged or custom applications, which includes analysis, coding, configuration, testing, debugging, documentation and maintenance.

The strongest candidates can move between detailed technical analysis and end-to-end business outcomes, tracing a transaction across systems and fixing the root cause rather than applying a temporary workaround.

Responsibilities

  • Design, enhance, deploy and support ACE flows that link applications, services, databases and outside partners.
  • Build message flows with MQ, HTTP, REST, SOAP, Compute, Flow Order, Failure, Catch and other ACE nodes.
  • Set up secure API and service calls using OAuth 2.0, covering token retrieval, headers, endpoint calls, responses and errors.
  • Create scalable, resilient, reusable microservices and API-led integrations that follow enterprise standards.
  • Configure and troubleshoot MQ Input and MQ Output nodes, including transactionality, order properties, transaction mode and delivery behavior.
  • Tune Compute node mode and transaction mode properties to control message propagation and transaction boundaries.
  • Design Failure Terminal and Catch Terminal handling for retries, alerts, recoverable errors, and technical and business exceptions.
  • Analyze how messages parse across common formats, then configure flows to parse, validate, route and transform payloads.
  • Map and transform data across XML, JSON, copybooks, service payloads, database records and file layouts.
  • Write ESQL with built-in functions, reusable procedures, shared logic and exception handling, and call Java methods where Java is the better fit.
  • Design and troubleshoot SOAP nodes, WSDL services, REST APIs, HTTP nodes and service orchestration.
  • Connect ACE to Oracle and other data sources over ODBC using SQL, stored procedures and database-driven processing.
  • Share data across flows with Global Cache, weighing consistency, performance, expiry and operational behavior.
  • Apply the difference between Message ID and Correlation ID when tracing requests, matching replies and handling asynchronous work.
  • Produce and route more than one output message from a single input when a business case calls for it.
  • Use TRY-CATCH and Flow Order to sequence work, isolate failures and define clear recovery paths.
  • Build and support Apigee integrations, covering API exposure, policies, security, traffic management, analytics and lifecycle.
  • Build Informatica mappings and workflows that extract data, apply business and data-quality rules, and load tables, files, feeds and downstream platforms.
  • Run ETL processes that move policy transaction data from Oracle and other sources into operational, reporting, financial, vendor and regulatory outputs.
  • Use Informatica transformations, lookups, joins, filters, aggregations, expressions, routers, parameters, mapplets and workflow controls to produce accurate, traceable data.
  • Monitor ETL sessions, fix rejected records and data-quality problems, manage dependencies, and handle reruns and recovery with restart and reconciliation practices.
  • Support production incidents, job failures, data issues, message reprocessing, operational reruns and root-cause analysis across connected systems.
  • Work with product owners, architects, analysts, testers, application teams and downstream consumers to deliver reliable solutions.
  • Analyze solutions, then develop, test, debug, document and deploy software to standards in an agile setting.
  • Apply secure engineering practices across the delivery lifecycle and use DevSecOps tools and methods.
  • Keep learning through training, practice and new ideas, manage medium to large project priorities and deadlines, and give technical guidance to others.
  • Take on other assigned responsibilities as needed.

Requirements

  • Four or more years in software engineering, application integration, middleware or related work.
  • Hands-on experience with IBM App Connect Enterprise, IBM Integration Bus, Informatica or comparable integration and ETL platforms.
  • Practical experience building and troubleshooting message flows, ESQL, MQ, REST, SOAP, HTTP nodes, Informatica mappings and workflows, and data transformations.
  • Understanding of the ETL lifecycle, including source-to-target mapping, transformation rules, validation, error handling, rejected records, reconciliation and loading.
  • Solid grasp of messaging, transaction boundaries, ordering, request/reply patterns, error handling and traceability.
  • Experience with OAuth 2.0, API authentication and authorization, microservices and API management platforms such as Apigee.
  • Experience with XML, JSON, data mapping, SQL, Oracle, ODBC or similar database connectivity.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems spanning applications, queues, APIs, databases, runtimes and downstream consumers.
  • Strong communication, documentation, testing, debugging and collaboration skills.
  • Willingness to learn new integration patterns, tools and technologies.
  • Undergraduate degree in computer science, management information systems or a related field. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can substitute.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Java, C++, Python or JavaScript.
  • Working knowledge of the software development lifecycle and a proven ability to solve complex business and development problems.
  • Ability to thrive on a team.
  • Preferred: Commercial Lines insurance, PolicyCenter or related policy transaction-processing experience.
  • Preferred: IBM ACE and IBM MQ administration, deployment, configuration and production support.
  • Preferred: Informatica ETL development, workflow and session management, source-to-target mapping, performance tuning, scheduling, monitoring and recovery.
  • Preferred: Apigee proxy development, policy configuration, security, traffic management and analytics.
  • Preferred: UNIX-based batch operations, scheduling tools, scripting and file handling.
  • Preferred: cloud, containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD, DevSecOps or observability practices.
  • Preferred: support for vendor, bureau, financial, print, reporting or regulatory data feeds.
  • Plus: insurance or financial services industry knowledge.
  • Leadership skills, competencies and other experience may outweigh these criteria. Exceptions must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and an HR Business Partner.
