Description

About Numeral:

Numeral is transforming how taxes get done. Digital businesses are currently bogged down by a painful web of regulations across 47 states and 50+ countries. We’re eliminating this burden so teams can focus on their core mission.

We’re the largest and fastest growing AI-native tax solution. Started in 2023, Numeral has raised over $157M from Benchmark, Mayfield, Y-Combinator, and many others. We now serve over 3,500 paying customers and have more than tripled our revenue every year in our history.

About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Platform to build the services, infrastructure, and developer interfaces that power Numeral.

Our platform team works across infrastructure, our public API, our MCP server, and integrations with billing platforms and ERPs. You’ll help make our systems more reliable and scalable while building new ways for customers and partners to connect with Numeral.

This is a hands-on role with meaningful ownership. You’ll take projects from design through production, contribute to architecture decisions, and work closely with product and engineering teams to make tax automation work reliably for our customers.

Responsibilities

  • Build and evolve our public API and MCP server, making it easy for customers, developers, and AI tools to work with Numeral.
  • Build integrations with billing platforms and ERPs, handling data synchronization, workflow automation, and the real-world complexity of financial data.
  • Improve the infrastructure behind our platform, supporting reliable APIs, background jobs, and data pipelines as transaction volumes grow.
  • Own projects end to end, including technical design, implementation, rollout, and ongoing operation.
  • Improve observability, performance, and incident response so we can identify problems quickly and prevent repeat issues.
  • Automate infrastructure and deployment workflows through infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, and container tooling.
  • Partner with product and engineering teams to ship new capabilities while keeping our systems dependable and maintainable.
  • What you’ll bring
  • 5+ years of experience building and operating backend software or platform systems in production.
  • Strong backend engineering skills, with experience in Node.js, PostgreSQL, and Redis, or comparable technologies.
  • Experience building APIs, integrations, or data pipelines, with attention to correctness, error handling, and maintainability.
  • Practical experience with AWS or another cloud platform and containerized workloads using ECS, Kubernetes, or similar tools.
  • An understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including retries, idempotency, queues, and failure recovery.
  • Experience using logs, metrics, and tracing to debug production issues and improve system reliability.
  • The ability to work through ambiguity, make pragmatic technical decisions, and communicate tradeoffs clearly.
  • Ownership and customer focus: you follow through, care about how your work performs in production, and connect technical decisions to customer needs.
  • Even better
  • Experience with payments, tax, accounting, or other systems where financial data needs to be accurate and auditable.
  • Experience integrating with billing platforms or ERPs.
  • Experience building public APIs, developer tooling, or MCP servers.
  • A background in infrastructure or platform engineering, including Terraform, CI/CD, or observability tooling.
  • Experience with event-driven systems or evolving a growing application’s architecture.
  • Experience: 3+ years
  • Visa: Will sponsor
