The company builds in-store retail solutions used by large grocery, fuel, and general merchandise chains, and is the installed market leader in its field.
The team delivers software for major retail platforms. This is a hands-on senior role that combines coding, client-facing technical leadership, and ownership of delivery after release.
You will work in Dual-Track Agile, prototyping and checking feasibility in the Discovery Track, then leading the Delivery Track to keep quality, traceability, and measurable results on target.
The company expects a senior engineer who writes code every day, builds prototypes on their own initiative, and uses AI and agent tools across analysis, design, testing, documentation, and code generation while leading client work and mentoring others.
Strong knowledge of retail platforms such as POS systems and store operations is required, along with cloud-native development experience and working fluency with generative and agentic AI tools that speed delivery without weakening code quality or architecture.
The company will not sponsor visas for this role now or in the future, so you must be able to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.
You must live near or within the Raleigh-Durham area.
Responsibilities
Use AI and agent workflows in your daily work to speed up design, prototyping, code generation, test case creation, specification drafting, and automated validation.
Model good AI-assisted development habits for the team and make sure generative AI tools are used ethically and responsibly.
Take a solution from discovery to delivery: build validated prototypes, contribute to formal designs, break work into deliverables, and ship technical work that gets accepted.
Lead the Discovery Track in Dual-Track Agile by writing working prototypes and demonstrating them to test feasibility and get stakeholders aligned before full build.
Turn discovery findings into delivery backlog items and work with implementation teams to keep design intent, code quality, and non-functional requirements intact.
Help produce technical design for products and integrations, including ADRs, interface contracts, data models, sequence diagrams, migration and rollback plans, and traceability matrices, working with architects on wider governance.
Act as the main technical lead in client engagements: run workshops, present technical solutions, make trade-off decisions, secure approvals, and serve as the subject-matter expert for assigned platform areas.
Build the most critical components and complex features on modern retail platform stacks, set the code quality bar through your own work, and review and approve deliverables from implementation teams.
Apply and reinforce engineering standards, reusable integration patterns, and non-functional requirements such as security, scalability, and observability in client solutions.
Mentor engineers on AI-assisted development, Dual-Track workflows, specification-driven design, and platform best practices, mainly through pair programming, code reviews, and leading by example.
Help shape platform and product strategy by spotting reusable assets, API-first design opportunities, and technical gaps that need investment.
Own risk analysis and mitigation for technical decisions, covering backward compatibility, data integrity, and compliance constraints.
Requirements
A bachelor's degree in computer science or engineering, plus 8+ years of experience.
Hands-on use of AI-assisted tools and workflows, such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude Code, for design, coding, test generation, and documentation.
8+ years of professional software development, with daily coding and prototyping in current technology stacks.
8+ years building cloud-native, microservices, or event-driven systems, including experience with Azure or an equivalent cloud platform.
Strong proficiency in stacks such as Java with Spring Boot, TypeScript, and React or Vue.
Proven record of owning end-to-end delivery of medium-to-large projects, covering design, implementation, and post-release operational responsibility.
A track record of building production code, prototypes, and reference implementations to prove solution feasibility.
Strong experience with REST and OpenAPI, messaging platforms, and relational and non-relational databases.
Hands-on skill with CI/CD, containers, Docker, Kubernetes, deployment tooling, and automated testing, plus AI and agent workflows that speed up the software lifecycle.
Practical experience with generative AI and AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or Cursor, with measurable effect on delivery.
Excellent stakeholder communication, including running workshops, presenting technical solutions, and working across business and engineering teams.
Proven ability to mentor engineers, perform thorough code reviews, and promote engineering best practices across teams.
Preferred qualifications: strong retail platform knowledge, such as POS systems and store operations, is highly desirable.
Preferred qualifications: certifications such as Azure Developer Associate, Azure Solutions Architect, or equivalent cloud credentials.
Preferred qualifications: strong understanding of advanced security practices and compliance requirements in enterprise systems.
Preferred qualifications: experience leading Dual-Track Agile, managing both tracks, and turning discovery results into actionable backlog items.
Preferred qualifications: experience contributing to platform strategy, reusable assets, and API-first designs.
Preferred qualifications: expertise in formal or machine-readable specifications, such as OpenAPI, UML with OCL, TLA+, or equivalent, to guide implementation and enable automated validation.
