Description

The company builds retail store solutions and is a billion-dollar global business headquartered in Research Triangle Park, NC.

This is a hands-on architecture role covering performance, scalability and resilience across a distributed platform made of edge devices, in-store servers and cloud services.

You will sit between customer delivery, platform architecture and production engineering, working directly with customers and internal teams to set performance expectations, check how the system really behaves, plan performance tests and use AI to widen non-functional validation.

Responsibilities

  • Work with customers to set performance expectations, scale targets and operational limits.
  • Turn business needs into performance models and test plans.
  • Advise on behavior at peak load, with many concurrent stores and high transaction volume.
  • Lead platform-wide performance testing with k6 and related tools.
  • Build realistic load models that reflect point-of-sale activity, store concurrency and cloud calls.
  • Set up repeatable, automated performance checks inside delivery pipelines.
  • Design virtualized environments that mirror production scale.
  • Build and maintain simulators for store workloads, transaction flows and external dependencies.
  • Make large-scale testing possible without full production infrastructure.
  • Own the infrastructure sizing models used in customer SOWs.
  • Give validated advice on cluster size, database capacity, message throughput and resource allocation.
  • Define how the system behaves during failures, degraded dependencies and partial outages.
  • Set patterns for timeouts, retries, circuit breakers, graceful degradation and workload isolation.
  • Make transactions visible end to end across edge, store and cloud.
  • Specify the telemetry needed to find bottlenecks quickly and improve diagnostic signal quality.
  • Use AI systems to generate and assess performance and resilience scenarios.
  • Spot regressions and anomalies in large test runs more reliably.
  • Automate validation workflows to raise production readiness.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a focus on distributed systems.
  • Proven performance engineering and scalability architecture work.
  • Hands-on use of k6 or a similar performance testing tool.
  • Experience designing and running load, stress and scalability tests.
  • Strong capacity planning and infrastructure sizing background.
  • Experience working directly with customers on performance and system behavior.
  • Deep knowledge of distributed patterns: concurrency control, latency management, retries with backoff and circuit breakers.
  • Experience with cloud-native systems on AWS, GCP or Azure, and with Kubernetes.
  • Strong debugging and performance analysis skills.
  • Preferred: experience with multi-tier architectures spanning edge, on-prem or store, and cloud.
  • Preferred: experience building simulation or virtualization environments.
  • Preferred: working with event-driven systems such as Kafka, Pub/Sub or MQ.
  • Preferred: implementing observability frameworks such as OpenTelemetry, Grafana or ELK.
  • Preferred: exposure to AI-driven testing or validation systems.
