Senior Staff Engineer - Systems

Description

The company builds service software for employee and customer experience, used by nearly 75,000 companies. This senior staff role sits at the technical centre of its multi-tier SaaS platform and drives how its architecture evolves.

You will help the team deliver resilient APIs, microservices and web-layer features for complex enterprise customers, with faster deployments, higher reliability and low latency.

You will also mentor engineers across functions, set a high bar for clean code and long-term ownership, and work with architecture, product, design, QA, operations and customer success to turn business goals into well-integrated software.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical roadmap for your domain, and design, document and deliver scalable, cost-efficient, low-latency platform solutions.
• Write clean, maintainable, high-performance code, including APIs and core platform features that scale with the company's global growth.
• Find the main architectural bottlenecks and technical debt, and plan practical, incremental refactoring that does not slow delivery.
• Own complex production incidents in distributed SaaS systems, lead deep root-cause analyses and put lasting safeguards in place.
• Set strict engineering standards through code review, automated testing and CI/CD integration, and keep raising the quality bar.
• Coach engineers across functions to sharpen their problem solving, systems thinking and operational discipline.
• Make sure platform designs and team practices meet the company's information security standards and regulatory compliance rules.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 12 to 15 years of hands-on software and systems or platform engineering in modern distributed SaaS environments.
• A record of owning end-to-end architecture and technical strategy for large products or core platform infrastructure.
• A history of building, shipping and maintaining high-availability, low-latency, high-throughput systems on tight deployment schedules.
• Extensive experience working with and influencing product, QA, operations and design teams to reach consensus.
• Expert-level Java (Spring/Spring Boot) or Python for building high-scale backend services.
• Deep knowledge of multi-tier architecture, microservices, RESTful APIs, messaging queues and database optimisation.
• Exceptional grasp of data structures, algorithms, advanced object-oriented design and design patterns.
• Advanced Linux internals knowledge, production debugging, log analysis and system telemetry in distributed cloud or SaaS setups.
• Strong experience with CI/CD automation, unit and integration testing frameworks, and writing clean code with minimal abstraction.
• Excellent written and spoken communication, including explaining complex technical trade-offs to engineers and executives.
