Senior Software Engineer

Description

The Maritime Mission Systems team builds sonar capability for UK and international navies, and the systems serve major defence programmes such as autonomous and conventional mine hunters, Astute class submarines, Merlin helicopters and Type 23 frigates.

You will join the Software Development team at the Manchester site and work with company sites in the UK and overseas on next-generation mission systems and sonar technologies.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement and test software solutions using industry standard tools and methods.
• Turn detailed designs into software components and carry them through to unit testing, delivering the vision set by the Product Owners and following the architectures defined by the Software Architects.
• Support software integration work and fix bugs found during verification.

Requirements

• Show evidence of activity that points to a career in software engineering.
• Understand the development lifecycle for complex systems, with several years of software development experience using Agile.
• Derive and manage software requirements.
• Design software solutions that meet operational needs.
• Demonstrate software development skills in Java or Python on Linux.
• Use industry standard development tooling such as IDEs, unit test frameworks and static analysis.
• Know software architectures and design patterns.
• Communicate clearly in writing and speech.
• Work as a key member of a team.
• Take responsibility for your professional development.
• Minimum requirement: a degree in a relevant subject such as Software Engineering, Computer Science, Maths, Physics or Engineering.
• Desirable: awareness of network design and configuration.
• Desirable: familiarity with containerisation, virtualisation and CI/CD.
• Desirable: knowledge of and experience developing Linux services.
• Desirable: experience with Ansible or other provisioning tools.
• Desirable: experience in defence or other engineering industries.
