Senior Software Engineer

Description

You will set the direction for performance across the platform used by the team's engineers, and lead how that strategy is written and revised over time. The goal is to meet what users expect in stability, throughput and speed.

Your work starts with reviewing what platform users need from performance and finding where current testing falls short. Test types to cover include smoke, load, stress, scalability, endurance, resilience, network, cross-architecture and component-level testing.

The company builds enterprise open source software, including Linux, cloud, container and Kubernetes technologies, and has associates in more than 40 countries.

Responsibilities

• Judge how much value different performance testing strategies and tools bring to the platform, including k6, Locust and chaos engineering frameworks.
• Set performance baselines, Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs) with stakeholders so they reflect business needs.
• Work with engineering, QE, SRE and product management to build performance checks into each stage of development and win support for strategic work.
• Specify what performance monitoring, observability and automated alerting must capture, including metrics, tracing and logs with tools such as Prometheus, Grafana and OpenTelemetry, so regressions and anomalies are caught.
• Find likely performance bottlenecks across the platform stack, including dependencies such as etcd, networking and storage, and recommend ways to improve them.
• Turn goals and gaps into concrete tasks, such as Jira epics and stories, and help teams prioritise capacity planning, cost optimisation and test implementation.
• Explain performance findings, strategy documents and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or a foreign equivalent, plus ten years of experience in this role or a related one.
• Ten years of experience with Linux operating systems, and with the Linux kernel and device drivers.
• Five years of experience analysing test data, visualising it and finding performance bottlenecks.
• Five years of experience with observability stacks such as Prometheus, Grafana, Jaeger, OpenTelemetry, ELK or Splunk.
• Five years of experience with the company Konflux, Tekton, or similar CI/CD and build systems.
• Three years of experience with container orchestration, including Kubernetes or OpenShift.
• Three years of experience with performance testing tools such as k6, Locust or JMeter, and/or with load, stress and endurance testing methods.

Conditions

Telecommuting is permitted within normal commuting distance of the company's office in Raleigh, NC.

The salary range is $159,910 to $195,680 per year, and the actual offer depends on your qualifications.

Pay is set by job location, experience, skills and training, external market value and internal pay equity. For Remote-US roles the range may vary by location but will match the duties and your experience.
