Backend Tech Lead

This is a hands-on Backend Tech Lead role in which you act as the main technical authority for critical system software, shaping its architecture, design and code quality.

You will combine deep engineering work with technical leadership, tackling the hardest programming, performance and reliability problems while leading design reviews and technical decisions.

Your work will affect the core product directly, helping to shorten time-to-market, cut costs and meet the needs of current and future customers.

Responsibilities

• Design and build advanced system software products.
• Improve performance and manage memory efficiently.
• Create solutions for virtualization, multithreading and the interaction between hardware and software.
• Build robust, scalable solutions to complex problems.
• Spot bottlenecks in system design early and replace them with scalable fixes.
• Debug, triage and resolve a wide range of issues in depth.
• Lead technical discussions, design reviews and decisions on critical system problems, and encourage the use of new approaches and good practices.
• Build and integrate solutions into complex systems.
• Assess new technologies against the technology roadmap and business value, and plan how to fit the useful ones into the architecture.
• Work with cross-functional teams to agree design goals and integrate smoothly with the system architecture.
• Introduce new methods that support continuous improvement.
• Track developments in virtualization and bring useful practices back to the team.
• Take on new or related tasks as they come up, solving problems as you go.

Requirements

• Strong hands-on backend engineering experience, with 10+ years in backend engineering.
• At least 10 years of experience with C.
• Practical experience using generative AI tools to speed up development and improve engineering efficiency, with a habit of learning continuously.
• Solid knowledge of Linux and virtualization platforms such as VMware, Hyper-V, KVM and OpenShift.
• Deep understanding of software systems design, development methods and integration across varied platforms and technologies.
• A track record of bringing fresh approaches to technical problems.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with a proactive approach.
• Excellent communication skills for presenting and discussing designs, proposals and solutions with senior management and stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently while guiding and mentoring other team members.
• A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or a related field.

Conditions

Hybrid role, with an average of 2 days per week in an HPE office.

Based in Ireland.

Permanent, full-time position in the Engineering function, job level TCP05.
