Senior Software Engineer I

Description

The role is Senior Software Engineer I on the Search and AI Platform team.

The team makes knowledge in the company's content searchable and usable through a data platform, serving researchers, clinicians and innovators in research, healthcare and life sciences.

The AI Platform team builds reusable generative AI capabilities that other product and platform teams can embed. The services it creates are scalable, secure and ready for production.

Responsibilities

• Make architectural decisions, set engineering standards and build robust systems for reusable AI services and components.
• Lead architectural design and keep the technical approach consistent.
• Design, build and maintain generative AI services and reusable components, written mostly in Python with some Java.
• Define and promote engineering best practices covering scalability, observability, testing and CI/CD.
• Contribute to system designs that span several services and modules.
• Work with product, platform and research teams to turn AI prototypes into production-ready capabilities.
• Deploy scalable, containerized applications in a Kubernetes (EKS) environment.
• Lead the resolution of complex technical problems in distributed systems.
• Mentor less-senior developers on engineering principles, GenAI patterns and platform development.
• Take part in code reviews, architecture sessions and cross-team initiatives to protect quality and maintainability.
• Track developments in generative AI and push for responsible use across product ecosystems.

Requirements

• 4-6 years of software engineering experience.
• Proven experience contributing to technical architecture for large-scale platforms or services.
• Solid grasp of software development methodologies and data modeling.
• Deep expertise in Python and Java.
• Backend development skills and familiarity with modern AI and LLM tools and frameworks, such as LangChain and LangGraph.
• Experience with Kubernetes (EKS) and cloud-native architectures.
• A record of building scalable backend systems and APIs.
• Experience mentoring engineers and shaping architectural decisions.
• Ability to collaborate across functions in an Agile or Kanban environment.
• Experience operationalizing LLMs or building internal AI platforms.
• Familiarity with observability practices: metrics, logging and alerts.
• Exposure to knowledge graphs or semantic search systems.

Conditions

U.S. national base pay range is $86,600 to $144,400. Geographic differentials may apply in some locations to reflect local market rates.

For roles performed in Maryland, the base pay range is $90,900 to $151,700.

For roles performed in New Jersey, the base pay range is $102,333 to $163,467.

The job is eligible for an annual incentive bonus.
