Description

Each time a shopper opens a product page in any of the company's markets, a decision engine chooses the seller, price, and delivery promise, based on what that shopper values.

The Buybox team builds the offer selection behind Search, the Product Details Page, and Recommendations.

Traffic is heavy and latency must stay low, so small performance gains and design choices both matter to customers, sellers, and the business.

The team is small and moves like a startup inside a very large retailer. Ideas go from sketch to production quickly, engineers are accountable for their systems from design through operation, and AI agents are part of daily work. The team values hard design debate and helping each other improve.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build high-throughput, low-latency services for offer selection and pricing at scale.
  • Build and improve streaming and batch pipelines using Kafka, Flink, BigQuery, and Airflow to feed algorithms and AI/ML models.
  • Work with data scientists to move ML models from experiments into production and measure their effect on customers through A/B tests.
  • Develop with AI agents and AI-assisted tools, and help set how the team uses them.
  • Lead design and code reviews, and speed up delivery from pull request through build to canary deploy.
  • Build tooling that keeps decisions reliable, including flip analysis, parity testing, and experiment dashboards.
  • Lead technical discussions with product, science, and partner teams across Search, Item Page, and Recommendations.

Requirements

  • Have 5+ years of production software experience, including 3+ years in Java, Python, or both.
  • Have a solid grounding in distributed systems, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Have built and run highly available, fault-tolerant, scalable microservices using REST or GraphQL.
  • Have hands-on experience with streaming systems such as Kafka or Flink.
  • Have experience with GCP or AWS.
  • Can take ambiguous problems from start to finish and drive design decisions across teams.
  • Can explain complex technical ideas clearly to both engineers and non-engineers.
  • Preferred: experience building production-grade AI/ML systems.
  • Preferred: experience with experimentation platforms and large-scale A/B testing.
  • Preferred: familiarity with BigQuery, Airflow, or ML pipeline tools such as TensorFlow or Kubeflow.
  • Preferred: background in pricing, marketplaces, offer ranking, or e-commerce.
  • Preferred: Node.js or React for internal tooling.
