Senior Software Engineer – UI Platform Lead

Description

The role is about designing, building and improving software that gives the business, platform and technology teams capabilities for customers and colleagues, using a range of engineering methods.

The company is building a UI platform that is AI-native by design, where components, tokens and patterns ship through tooling and APIs, not only as code. This role leads the team that shapes how digital experiences are built and delivered across the company.

You would join the cross-business digital platform engineering team, which builds the shared technology layer behind the company's digital experiences.

Responsibilities

• Build and ship high-quality software with current languages, frameworks and tools, keeping code scalable, easy to maintain and fast.
• Work with product managers, designers and engineers to pin down requirements, choose solution approaches and keep work aligned with business goals.
• Review peers' code and share knowledge to raise code quality across the team.
• Track technology trends and new developments, and contribute to internal technology communities to build technical depth.
• Write code with secure practices that prevent weaknesses and protect sensitive data.
• Apply solid unit testing so code is well designed, readable and dependable.
• Advise senior stakeholders, including functional leadership and senior management, on how work affects their areas and where it aligns.
• Identify, assess and reduce risk in support of the control and governance agenda, and take ownership of risk and controls in your team's work.
• Understand how the wider organisation works and how business-facing support areas operate, so your work supports the strategy.
• Analyse complex options and difficult problems in depth, drawing on research to shape solutions.
• Build trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders, using influence and negotiation to reach business goals.
• Set or contribute to strategy, drive requirements, recommend changes, plan resources and budgets, maintain policies and processes, make continuous improvements, and escalate breaches of policy.
• If the role includes managing people: define jobs and responsibilities, plan the department's future needs, coach people on performance, input on pay decisions, and balance short and long term goals within budget and schedule. Requirements

• Essential: React and TypeScript used in a library or platform context, not only in application code.
• Essential: design token architectures such as DTCG or Style Dictionary, plus tooling that transforms tokens across platforms.
• Essential: building integrations between a platform and external tools such as design tools, code editors and CI pipelines.
• Essential: Java and Spring for API services, or Node.js for tooling and build pipelines.
• Essential: experience with generative or AI-assisted developer tools, either building them or integrating them into a platform.
• Highly valued: infrastructure-as-code, Kubernetes or CI/CD pipeline design for platform services.
• Highly valued: building or running registries, artefact distribution or developer tooling platforms.
• Highly valued: understanding how mobile and native teams consume shared UI artefacts and the limits of supporting several platforms.
• Highly valued: JSON Schema, OpenAPI or contract-first API design.
• Highly valued: contributions to open-source projects, design systems or technical standards.
