(Senior) Software Engineer - Data Core

Description

The team builds Data Core, the storage abstraction layer between ETL workloads and the backends that run them, including Databricks, Snowflake, StarRocks, Spark, and PostgreSQL.

Your work spans three codebases: a Java and Spring Boot service with gRPC and message-queue APIs, sqlglot for SQL translation and optimization across dialects, and StarRocks, the OLAP engine used as a backend.

The company provides a platform for building and running AI-driven business processes. It has headquarters in Munich, Germany and New York City, USA, and more than 20 offices worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Build features and fix bugs in the Data Core backend integrations.
• Add and repair sqlglot dialect support, covering parsing, SQL generation, and correct transpilation.
• Look into StarRocks behavior and compatibility problems, then contribute fixes or workarounds.
• Trace slow or wrong queries from the SQL text through the query plan to the results.
• Write unit and integration tests, with a focus on SQL translation edge cases.
• Join design discussions, write short design docs for your own work, and review code in both directions.
• As a senior, lead small to medium projects from start to finish and help onboard newer teammates.

Requirements

• Solid Java, or strong Python and willingness to work in Java every day.
• Good SQL: joins, aggregations, window functions, and how queries execute.
• Hands-on familiarity with at least one analytical or distributed data system, such as Spark, Snowflake, Databricks, Trino, ClickHouse, or StarRocks.
• Sound testing and debugging habits.
• Clear communication in writing and speech, and a habit of asking questions early.
• Strong Plus: knowledge of how SQL parsers, ASTs, or query planners work.
• Strong Plus: open source contributions, especially to sqlglot or StarRocks.
• Strong Plus: experience with gRPC, message queues, or Kubernetes.
• Strong Plus: some C++ experience.
• Strong Plus: interest in query optimization and database internals.
