Senior Service Reliability Engineer

Description

The company behind the PlayStation brand is looking for a senior engineer for its Site Reliability Engineering team, which keeps the cloud gaming service stable and gives customers a good experience.

The company is a subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation. It builds hardware and network services used by over 100 million people, and it also creates entertainment from well-known intellectual properties.

The team shapes design and operational choices to keep the service stable. Its SREs own production, care about production code quality, and manage deployments.

SREs are expected to form views on the service and give direct feedback at each stage of the operational lifecycle. They join early in software development to make sure systems are ready to run and stay stable.

The role suits someone who works independently and takes part in decisions at several levels.

Responsibilities

• Lead the work on improving reliability and scalability.
• Work with SRE management to set KPIs and processes and keep improving them.
• Shape the architecture and build of solutions across the division.
• Coach junior SREs and help them grow.
• Speak for SRE across the wider organisation.
• Assess how well solutions will scale across the division.
• Run small projects from first idea through to delivery.
• Design solutions that cover the whole platform and lead their rollout.
• Show strong organisation and take initiative in the role.
• The company runs background checks at the offer stage for all new hires, which may include criminal checks for some roles, and will process personal data for this.

Requirements

• At least 7 years of experience in software development, Linux systems administration, or both.
• Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication.
• Able to join an on-call rotation.
• Experienced running Linux production systems, including large-scale web services infrastructure.
• Programming experience in at least one of Python (preferred), Bash, Go, Java, C++, or Rust.
• Experience with at least 3 of the following areas:
• Distributed data storage at scale, such as Hadoop or Ceph.
• NoSQL at scale, such as MongoDB, Redis, or Cassandra.
• Data aggregation tools, such as ElasticSearch or Kafka.
• Running and scaling traditional relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL with high availability.
• Monitoring and alerting, such as Prometheus or Grafana, plus incident management tools.
• Kubernetes and/or AWS deployment and management.
• Software distribution, including package management and distribution at scale.
• Configuration management with tools such as Ansible, SaltStack, Puppet, or Chef.
• Software performance analysis and load testing. QA or SDET experience is a plus.

Conditions

The role requires being available for an on-call rotation.
